  3. Where to enjoy ice cream in Wroclaw?

Such weather as this just makes you crave ice cream. That's why we've decided to describe Wroclaw's several places that are famous for it. Some of them have been in business for more than thirty years, and their recipes are passed on from one generation to the other. Some other shops are relatively young, but they already have their faithful customers.

Roma (ul. Rydygiera 5)

This is one of the most traditional ice cream shops in Wroclaw. Since its inception in 1946, the shop has been using traditional methods to produce ice cream. They produce ice cream in more than 100 flavours, and you can sample about 20 different types of ice cream every day. Their strawberry and lemon ice flavours prove to be the most popular. If you buy one scoop you will get one free, which is why people like to buy them so much. But the place also attracts sweet cream, vanilla and chocolate ice cream lovers, and the owner, who often experiments with flavours, sometimes offers beer or vegetable ice cream as well.

Ice cream shop on ul. Cybulskiego

This is also one of the most traditional ice cream shops in Wroclaw. The place was established in 1968, and has been producing ice cream according to trusted recipes since then, with natural ingredients and in the machines used by the founders. There are twelve different flavours on offer, including blueberry, cinnamon, halva and coffee. The shop also offers lemon and strawberry ice cream on a buy-one-get-one-free basis.

Ice cream shop on ul. Wita Stwosza

This is a typical family business. The shop is in business from 1978, and is currently managed by the founder's daughter. They serve Italian ice cream in two flavours: sweet cream and cocoa. But you can also combine the two in one cone. Several glazes are on offer as well. Customers are particularly fond of natural strawberry glaze, which is made with fresh strawberries in summer and with frozen strawberries in winter.

"The majority of people who visit the shop are our returning customers. They enjoyed our ice cream when they were children, and now they are bringing their own kids to enjoy it as well. Sometimes we also have visitors who emigrated many years ago, and when they come that are delighted that we are still in business," Mirosława Rodkiewicz, the shop's owner, adds laughingly.

Słodka Brama (ul. Pereca 9)

The shop, which is also a traditional family business, has been operating since 1977. The shop offers twelve different flavours every day, but the shop produces around one hundred flavours every season, because the owners are keen to add a little bit of variety to their offer."We strive to prepare something new for each season," says the shop's current owner, Jacek Michalak. "This season we are going to produce mojito, green tea and lemon and fresh ginger flavours," he adds.

Komandorska

This ice cream and confectionery shop has been in business for 48 years now. The place is now Urszula and Barbara Kłaptocz's property. Their ice cream is produced according to a traditional recipe and with natural ingredients. There are more than twenty different flavours on offer, including vanilla, sweet cream and chocolate flavours, and strawberry, lemon and grapefruit sorbets as well.

"We strive to add a new flavour every day, but we also have a list of our regular flavours such as sweet cream, coffee, vanilla and chocolate," says Urszula Kłaptocz. "Our customers are particularly fond of our strawberry sorbet," she adds.

Lody Barton (Wroclaw, Main Market Square, Cloth Hall)

This ice cream brand has also managed to raise at least two generations of faithful customers. The brand has been in business since 1971, and is currently running seven different shops. One of the shops can be found at the Cloth Hall in Wroclaw's Main Market Square. The shop offers around fifty different flavours, including ice cream for diabetics, children allergic to cow's milk proteins and gluten-free ice cream as well.

"But there are also flavours that are a must, such as sweet cream chocolate ans strawberry, even though I have created quite a lot of different flavours for the last forty years," admits the brand's owner, Anna Barton. "I used to experiment in the past to come up with beer, carrot or beetroot ice cream, but the I know from experience that people like standard flavours best," she adds.

Cukiernia na Zawalnej (ul. Zawalna 1b)

This confectionery shop has been in business for more than 20 years now and has offered ice cream since its very inception. They produce ice cream in thirty different flavours and according to traditional recipes. Their customers are particularly fond of vanilla ice cream, but other flavours, such as fresh fruit, milk, chocolate and caramel flavours remain popular as well. The confectionery makes ice cream only with natural ingredients.

Tralalala Cafe (ul. Więzienna 21 Wroclaw)

The shop has been in business for five years and has 96 different flavours on regular offer. The ice cream is made on the spot and the production process can be seen through a glass partition wall that separates the restaurant from the ice cream lab. The venue's owner comes from Italy, which is why there are many Sicilian flavours on offer. The showcase flavours include Sicilian pistachio and Sicilian almond. The café makes ice cream only with natural ingredients.

Bola Dosse (ul. Świdnicka 7)

This is a relatively new establishment. The brand has been in business for two years, and apart from the shop on ul Świdnicka, it also has venues on ul Oławska and Pasaż Zielińskiego. "We sell ice cream that we have made on our own, and we seek inspiration in our customers and the four season of the year," says the brand owner, Magdalena Gaszewska-Teixeira. "For example, we had May nettle on our May offer as we tend to focus on seasonal flavours," she adds.

The ice cream shop is best known for its pistachio, mascarpone and white chocolate and mango vitamin bomb ice cream. The offer also features raspberry sorbet with port. The brand offers 98 different flavours, and the ice cream is produced on a daily basis.

Polish Lody (Plac Bema 3/1B)

This is youngest ice cream shop in town. The shop was established on Saturday 17 May this year. It was set up by two young men: Piotr Chlebowicz, a graduate of Wroclaw's University of Physical Education, and Kamil Windorpski, a graduate of Wroclaw's University of Technology. They protect their recipes like the apple of their eye, but they can reveal that they use no vegetable fats and food colourings in the production process.

"We make ice cream only with natural ingredients such as milk and sweet cream," asserts Piotr Chlebowicz. "We have five different flavours on offer, three of them are regular, and the other two change on a daily basis," he adds. You can buy gluten-free ice cream there as well.
