On Monday 24th March, GE Aerospace announced the official opening of its state-of-the-art XEOS aircraft engine maintenance facility in Środa Śląska near Wroclaw. See a photo gallery from the opening ceremony.
GE Aerospace and Lufthansa Technik – XEOS
XEOS is a high-tech MRO (Maintenance, Repair & Overhaul) facility established as part of a joint venture between GE Aerospace and Lufthansa Technik, and specialises in the overhaul, repair and servicing of CFM International (CFM International is a joint venture where 50% of shares are held by GE Aerospace and Safran Aircraft Engines) LEAP engines that power the most popular narrow-body aircraft. This category includes the CFM LEAP-1A propulsion units used in the Airbus A320neo family and the CFM LEAP-1B used in Boeing 737 MAX aircraft.
Alan Kelly, General Manager, LEAP Engine Services, GE Aerospace: ‘The opening of this facility underlines our commitment to the development of global MRO services for LEAP CFM engines and GE Aerospace's long-term commitment to Poland.’
XEOS – an important investment for the agglomeration
Today's opening of XEOS is the second event of this kind in the history of this facility. As you may remember, the XEOS Aircraft Engine Service and Repair Centre in Środa Śląska near Wroclaw was launched in September 2019. In June 2021, due to the crisis in the aviation industry, XEOS suspended its operations. Now the plant has been reopened.
In an interview to wroclaw.co.uk, Robert Burton, Managing Director of XEOS, highlighted that the construction of the XEOS plant cost USD 250 million. They will invest USD 40 million there in 2025.
Robert Burton, Managing Director of XEOS: 'In 2025, 36 engines are to be serviced at the plant. Future development plans for the plant assume the servicing of one engine per day. Engines will fit onto normal trucks, so there will be no difficulties during transport.
Magdalena Okulowska, President of the Wroclaw Agglomeration Development Agency: ‘The presence of XEOS in the Wrocław agglomeration is a matter of great pride for us. Started in 2019, the investment underlines the growing importance of the aviation industry in our region. We are extremely pleased that the plant is coming back stronger with ambitious development plans.
XEOS looks for employees
The XEOS plant is a state-of-the-art 35,000 sq.m. facility, including an engine pre-inspection hall, the main assembly and disassembly hall, an advanced cleaning and inspection line, a constantly growing number of repair bays, a training centre and a state-of-the-art test chamber.
The XEOS team currently consists of 250 people – aircraft engine mechanics, engineers, logisticians and administration staff – and they are still looking for new employees.
Iwona Uchnast, Senior HR Manager – XEOS Site HR Leader: ‘In the first place, aircraft engine technicians with and without experience can count on a job, as we offer specialised training courses that last from 9 to 12 months.
‘We have training engines on site, so we are able to quickly develop the competencies of our staff and build a team of highly qualified specialists in the Wroclaw region,’ Robert Burton, Managing Director of XEOS.
XEOS plant: maintenance, repair and overhauls of aircraft engines
The XEOS plant currently carries out service inspections of LEAP-1B engines and supports modular repairs and tests of LEAP-1A engines. Putting a test bed for LEAP-1B engines into operation and further expansion of the plant's repair and overhaul capacity is planned in the coming months.
Christian Seitler, Senior Director, New Engine Types, Lufthansa Technik: ‘Two months ago, we proudly announced that LOT Polish Airlines had selected Lufthansa Technik as a maintenance partner for its CFM LEAP-1B engines.’
‘It was, therefore, a natural step to accept LOT’s first engine for servicing right at the XEOS plant in Poland. This state-of-the-art facility is an excellent addition to our LEAP engine service infrastructure in Hamburg,’ adds Christian Seitler.
XEOS near Wroclaw services LOT's engines
Lufthansa Technik and LOT Polish Airlines announced the signing of a service agreement for CFM LEAP-1B engines in January 2025. Currently, the Polish national carrier operates a fleet of 18 Boeing 737 MAX 8 planes, with an order for further 13 vehicles under processing, which means a total of 62 LEAP-1B engines and – in addition – spare units.
Maciej Maciejewicz, Head of Powerplant, LOT Polish Airlines: ‘We are delighted to see our CFM LEAP-1B engines being serviced by native specialists at the XEOS plant.’
'This modern service centre and its highly qualified staff bring enormous potential benefits not only to our airline but also to the dynamically developing aviation sector in Poland,’ says Maciej Maciejewicz.
