Enthusiasts renovate legendary Ikarus

Public transport enthusiasts are now renovating an Ikarus which still provided regular service for the citizens last autumn. The Klub Sympatyków Transportu Miejskiego (Urban Transport Enthusiasts' Club) bought the bus from MPK Wroclaw to save it from scrapyard. Grinders are now in a full swing. "We are in a hurry because we want the bus to return to the streets this year," says Krzysztof Kołodziejczyk, President of the Public Transport Enthusiasts' Club.

This is the last Ikarus to have roamed the streets of Wroclaw. It was pulled out of service last year as Wroclaw received brand new Solaris vehicles. The bus was purchased by the Urban Transport Enthusiasts' Club. "We've decided to save this legendary bus which everybody knows in Wroclaw, and a lot of people still have a soft spot for it. We would like to save this part of Wroclaw's history from oblivion" explains the club's president.

The bus is in good technical condition, which is why the enthusiasts have decided to renovate it themselves. They mainly focus on the bodywork. "We are planning to restore its original beige-and-red colours to make it look like the car that has just entered the service," says the president. How can you tell the colour? "First days brought first discoveries. This is an original claret colour. You can see it when you remove the open-the-door button. This is the colour we want to restore," Mr Kołodziejczyk points at the side of the vehicle.

The good cause connects a variety of transport enthusiasts who come to share their experience. Bogumił Ucherek from Fiat Coupe Polska is lending a hand in renovating the bodywork. "It's great we've got people who want to save Wroclaw's legacy. They are doing a good job. And I think it's worth joining in," says Bogumił Ucherek. I've been renovating sports cars before. This bus is something bigger, but the rules remain the same," he adds.

The bus was manufactured as part of the last 280 series . It comes with an automatic gearbox, which is why it is commonly referred to as the "automatic". It entered the service 20 years ago. It looked like previous generations of the brand. It differed only in several details such as doors (double doors instead their folding counterparts). The vehicle is set for thorough renovation.

The Urban Transport Enthusiasts' Club have already saved several other vehicles from scrapyard. These include the celebrated Enudsia, or a 4N carriage, dated to 1960 and purchased and collectively renovated by the enthusiasts. They are now also in the process of renovating a 102Na. This articulated tram was manufactured in 1972 and served at MPK until 2009.
