Is Park Mieszczański – a new central park in Wroclaw – closer than farther? The city has just started works at Kępa Mieszczańska. At first, the former military area will be adapted for the needs of the park.

‘We are starting the first works at Kępa Mieszczańska, where a park will be created in accordance with projects selected in the Wroclaw Citizens’ Budget [WBO] in 2020 and 2021,’ wrote the Mayor of Wroclaw Jacek Sutryk on Facebook.

Removing pollutants from the soil is required in the former military area. This process, called bioremediation, will be carried out by pouring a biopreparation containing microorganisms into small holes drilled on the surface.

‘By binding and transforming pollutions, the fungi and bacteria will reduce their concentration in the soil. After this, we can safely build a park here,’ says Marek Szempliński from the City Green Administration in Wroclaw.

Currently, bidding is under way to perform the bioremediation of the land and project documentation is being prepared.

The first stage of the park was selected by Wroclaw inhabitants in the WBO 2020 voting. Project 1 received 3,892 votes. The second stage was WBO 2021 – Project 1, which received 2,981 votes. The total cost of implementation of each of them is around 2,000,000 PLN.

In 2020, the city prepared a concept of the park at Kępa Mieszczańska in co-operation with inhabitants. It takes into account the proposals submitted by inhabitants during social consultations, including the greening of the premises and additional infrastructure, including kids zones or sports equipment.

The inhabitants suggested also opening a park on the Oder, as well as developing the area along the bank and connecting it via footbridges with neighbouring housing estates: Nadodrze and Szczepin.

‘The ready project was influenced by suggestions from three parties: the city representatives, the inhabitants who have created the group ‘Park na Kępie Mieszczańskiej’ [Park at Kępa Mieszczańska] and developers carrying out construction projects at Kępa Mieszczańska,’ said Monika Glińska, the leader of social consultations conducted on behalf of the Foundation for European Studies.

The new central park of Wroclaw will be an area with designated recreation and leisure zones that will be created with the maintenance of the proposed layout of paths and pedestrian and cycle routes, which will allow visitors to move freely around the park. The zones are to be located at an adequate distance from residential buildings to protect their inhabitants from noise.

‘The existing old trees with be enriched with new frequent plantings of trees and shrubs. The vegetation cover will be based on proposals submitted at the consultation stage, with maintenance of the naturalistic character of the park, the lay of the land and the view of the river. In the course of the works, the existing greens are to be left and loggings should be kept to a minimum. Apart from that, insulating greenery will be introduced,’ stresses Joanna Koniecka-Pasierska, Investment Director in the City Green Administration
