This year, traffic-calmed zones will appear on even more streets in Wroclaw. It means, inter alia, 30 km/h zones or some of the intersections raised above the road. This will increase the safety of pedestrians and cyclists.
The first changes from 24 January
First, Roads Authority and City Maintenance (Zarząd Dróg i Utrzymania Miasta) will change the traffic organisation on Dobra and Ziemowita street, in the city centre. There is a 30 km/h zone since 24 January. What is more, on Dobra street there will be a cycling lane and only one-way traffic for cars, from Braniborska to Legnicka street. That's not all. This year we will also have 30 km/h zones on the following streets: Wieczysta, Sztabowa (intersection with Pocztowa), Księcia Witolda, Moniuszki, Wschodnia and Radosna. The office is working on the projects determining what traffic management solutions will be applied there."All the changes are consulted with the housing estates' councils and residents, and very often the solutions are implemented at their request," says Katarzyna Kasprzak from the Department of Urban Engineering (Wydział Inżynierii Miejskiej). They are also reviewed by traffic policemen and municipal guards.
Pedestrians will also be safer on Żernicka and Królewiecka street. Those streets are not traffic-calmed, but pedestrian refuges will be created to facilitate walking the streets.
More friendly Bogusławskiego street
Apart from those activities, the Municipal Office (Urząd Miejski) is planning the change in traffic organisation on Bogusławskiego street. The officials want it to be another showcase of the city centre and a place where Wroclaw residents and visitors would spend their free time. To achieve this, the changes will also be made at the intersection of Świdnicka and W. Bogusławskiego street. A pedestrian crossing and bicycle crossing will be created near the viaduct. "The concept of the crossing was passed to ZDiUM (Roads Authority and City Maintenance) with a request to prepare construction documentation," said Elwira Nowak, an associate director of the Department of Urban Engineering of the Municipal Office (Wydział Inżynierii Miejskiej Urzędu Miejskiego) in Wroclaw, in an interview for wroclaw.pl at the end of September. The crossing is the priority, as it is a guarantee of reviving the whole Bogusławskiego street. Apart from that, enlargement of the tram stop "Arkady" will also be an improvement. After the renovation it will function as a double stop and it will be possible to walk straight to the planned pedestrian crossing from there.
Nadodrze and Ołbin will be more peaceful
Similar changes are also planned for Nadodrze and Ołbin. The realisation of all the investments will take a few years, but the planned changes are being consulted with the residents at the moment. A lot is going to change on Jedności Narodowej, Probusa, Trzebnicka and Słowiańska street, and for the benefit of pedestrians and cyclists. The officials also plan traffic calming there. Apart from that, raised intersections will be created, as well as special gates that will reduce the speed of the drivers, many streets will be changed into one-way streets. No definitive solutions are ready yet, because it is a complex process, but the residents of Nadodrze already liked the ideas. "With such solutions we will not have to worry about the children that walk the busy streets to get to school. If the cars are slowed down there, it will be much safer," says Jerzy Sznerch, the chairman of the management board of Nadodrze housing estate.
