Economic urban game ”I am becoming an entrepreneur”

On 21 September 2010, as part of the Lower Silesian Science Festival, the first economic urban game entitled "I am becoming an entrepreneur" was carried out in Wrocław. The project was addressed to secondary school students. The co-organiser of the project was Bank Zachodni WBK S.A., and its partners were: Wrocław Regional Development Agency S.A. and Entrepreneurship Support Centre – institution managing the Wrocław Incubator of Entrepreneurship.

The game was led by the author of the concept and the script – Marek Szewczyk from the Winning Coaching School. The aim of the game was to introduce the young people into the world of business and business-related institutions actually functioning in the city. The players had to show creativity, entrepreneurship and ability to teamwork. Their task was to create a business plan for the development of their own enterprise, which will be accepted by the actual credit advisors. Moreover, the participants had to face a fortuitous event and anticipate the impact of its effects on development of their own business. The properly formulated business plan became the basis for receiving a pre-approved credit, and that credit, in turn, gave a right to purchase means of production (in the game, their symbols were the building blocks).

As the final effect, the game participants built mock-ups of their own business.

All elements of the game were scored, including the ability to cooperate between the teams, the originality and comprehensibility of the logo and appropriateness of the company name.

Description of the activities in the economic urban game:

a. drawing the business – the teams draw among the 3 options: computer company, logistic company or cow farm; the drawn industry determined, inter alia, the logo, company name, business plan, the product offer of the enterprise;

b. establishment of the company – selection of the team leader, logo creation, thinking about the company name, marking T-shirts;

c. trip to obtain the information – the teams are given instructions to formulate a business plan for their business, create a SWOT analysis and receive a city map on which they locate the institutions where they can go for information/assistance (Business Information Point at the City Hall of Wrocław, Consultation Point for Entrepreneurs at the Wrocław Regional Development Agency and Wrocław Incubator of Entrepreneurship);

d. return to the base, business lunch – analysis of collected information, formulating business plans on their basis, completing applications to the institutions for granting financial means, signing cooperation agreements with other game participants;

e. trip to obtain the money – the participants go to the specific institutions, to submit the completed business plans and applications and to receive a pre-approved credit on their basis;

f. return to the base – purchase of means of production using obtained financial resources and the construction of a mock-up of own business;

g. work of the jury – assessment of the companies, building a ranking, announcement of results, presentation of awards.
