Nominees for the Literary Award Angelus 2016

Data publikacji: Autor:

Among books nominated in the first stage of selection are 54 titles of Polish authors and 16 books by foreign writers, among them 4 Slovak, Romanian 3, 2 Lithuanian, 2 Russian, and one Ukrainian, Austrian, Czech, German and Bosnian. Semi-finalists (14 titles) will be announced in the beginning of August, and the winner will be announced on October 15.

The author will receive a check for 150,000 PLN and a statue designed by Ewa Rossano; in the case of a foreign writer, the translator will also be awarded (a prize of 20,000 PLN).

'This year we received many essay books, which is a problem for jurors who must decide where the line between the literary essay, and e.g. reportage, and biography is, points out Mykola Riabczuk, Ukrainian writer and Chairman of the Jury of the Central European Literary Award Angelus. 'This is the first such good year for Lithuanian literature, because we have two authors, Kristina Sabaliauskaité and Alvydas Šlepikas, stresses Piotr Kępiński, a member of the jury. 'The moment when we receive this huge trunk with seventy some books almost gives me a heart attack. Every time, I promise myself that this would be the last year and I will never do it again, smiles Professor Stanisław Bereś of the jury. 'Though many of the books stay with you forever, reading them in such abundance leaves me half-dead, like a swimmer who swam the English Channel, adds Professor Bereś.

Literary critic and jury member, Krzysztof Masłoń notes that we are increasingly willing to grab a book from Central Europe. 'In the mid-90s, there was no way to publish a book of, for example, a Serbian author in Poland. We were so fascinated by the Anglo-Saxon literature, that anything else was out of the question, he explains. Today there are a lot of niche publishing houses, and the Angelus gives them the opportunity to present the book to a wider audience, explains Krzysztof Masłoń.

What is the dominating topic in the books that were submitted the Angelus this year? Not necessarily the shared experience of communism. 'We live with other things now, but there is still a strong echo of the war and the entire associated trauma. It is sad that this is our hallmark in Europe, but apparently these things are still important for us, and also for me personally, admits Krzysztof Masłoń.

During this year's edition of the Central European Literature Award Angelus the jury has changed. Professor Andrzej Zawada will no longer be a member. - The professor has been appointed to the chair of the jury of the Silesius Poetry Prize, said Jarosław Broda, director of Wroclaw City Office Culture Department. New member of the jury will be Michał Nogaś, literary critic also known from the Fredro's Pen Prize.

The award was founded by the city of Wroclaw, and applies to books, the authors of which come from one of the countries of Central Europe (including Albania, Bulgaria, the Czech Republic, Estonia, Lithuania, Germany, Poland, Russia, Ukraine, and Hungary). The books are entered by publishers, but also the jurors themselves. Apart from the author, a prize (EUR 20 000) also goes to a Polish translator of the book (in case the Angelus goes to a Polish writer, the award goes to a translator of one of the runner-up books). In addition, awarded will be the Natalya Gorbanyevska Readers Prize. The prize commemorates the long-time president of the Angelus' jury (readers will choose the best book in an online poll).

So far, the winners of the Central European Literature Award Angelus were: Ukrainian Yuri Andrukhovych, Austrian Martin Pollack, Hungarian Péter Esterházy, Slovak Pavol Rankov, or last year, Ukrainian Serhiy Zhadan.
