From the 1st of September, 28 Kindle 5 Classic e-readers are available to readers completely for free. They can be borrowed in Fonoteka. You can borrow an e-reader for a month, download any e-books to its memory and enjoy reading as long as you want. However, you should remember that failure to return an e-reader on time will result in a fine (1 PLN per day) and that it is necessary to delete all files downloaded by you from the e-reader before returning it. The availability of e-readers can be checked in the library catalogue: www.dzb.pl (search by title: "Czytnik Kindle 5").
”E-readers attract much interest," says Katarzyna Brzezicka-Dobrzyńska from Fonoteka. "Out of 28 items available on the shelf, there are only 7 left. It's worth noticing that an e-reader is not a technical novelty only for young people, as it is also borrowed by middle-aged readers," she adds.
The idea of introducing e-readers for borrowing was put forward by Joanna Golczyk, Head of Fonoteka, who had seen similar solutions in libraries in Opole and Kraków. “We reached the conclusion that the use of an e-reader is an interesting way to promote reading; apart from that, it's worth keeping up with the times", explains Katarzyna Brzezicka-Dobrzyńska.
The library wrote a project, submitted it to the Marshal’s Office and received financial aid for the purchase of e-readers from the budget of the self-government of the Lower Silesian Province.
E-readers can be borrowed only by adult readers registered in the Lower Silesian Public Library in Wroclaw. Each e-reader contains two demonstrative books issued by the library – detective stories and a children’s book, which can help readers learn to use a Kindle device.
E-books can be bought in e-bookshops or downloaded from free e-book databases. Their list is available on the Legalna Kultura (Legal Culture) website.
