Festival of High Temperatures Vol. 9

This is the ninth edition of the International Festival of High Temperatures, which has been successfully organized for years by the Wrocław Academy of Fine Arts. It is the only open artistic event in Poland, during which the artisan masters of fire will share their knowledge and experience with the audience, presenting their work somehow "from inside out."

During this year's edition, the slogan of which is "There is no art without fire", you will be able to participate in events, workshops and exhibitions, in which outstanding artists from around the world will present their creativity and skills.

Section: metal - During this year's edition of the Festival, Michał Staszczak will hold a presentation on creating sculptures using an outdoor tilting furnace of his own design. On the other hand, Andy Griffiths will present a spectacular casting process, combined with a performance. Also, American artist Rick Batten, together with students from the Academy of Fine Arts in Gdansk, will lead the workshops in making reliefs for cast iron casts (the so-called scratch blocks), as well as a casting demonstration with a small outdoor furnace. Also to visit us is Jack Gron, who will hold an original, exciting presentation on casting iron, which - as it turns out - is one of the major attractions of the Festival every year. On display during the Festival will be also a cascade of fire, prepared by students of the AFA, and numerous shows with hot metal. For participants of the FHT prepared are also various workshops allowing one to challenge metal one-on-one - make small sculpture forms with both aluminium and bronze.

Section: ceramics - The ceramic section won't be boring, either. Rytis Konstantinavičius will present a different face of the Raku ceramics. Specially for the festival, the artist will also make an outdoor furnace that will serve him for firing the Raugo ceramics. In turn, Tomas Daunora build a wood-fired furnace for making black pottery, which will reveal the secrets of the ancient method of firing, used in Lithuania. During the FWT presented will be also a technique called 'piedra y palette', which was used by a pre-Columbian tribe Vicus for decades. Students with the Student Research Club will make a copy of a Bronze Age vessel for perfume distillation - you can see, smell and even purchase the obtained perfume in specially engraved bottles. Wiktoria Snela will attempt to combine sound with ceramics, and Leri Papidze - senior pottery master - will traditionally hold a demonstration and workshop 'The magic of a potter's wheel,' which enjoys great interest. Ways of working on the potter's wheel will also be introduced by Italians Mario Bertolin and Rinaldo Di Claudio. They will present a technique, which is not used in Poland: 'lateral' turning on a potter's wheel. As every year, also held will be the campaign Empty Bowls, a 3D printer presentation, and numerous workshops and demonstrations.

Section: glass - As part of the section Glass, you will see a demonstration of glasswork techniques of blowing hot glass into ceramic forms, held by Marta Byrdziak and Martyna Rychlik. Festival audience will have the opportunity to learn the process called roll-up, which is a technique of creating mosaic patterns inside form vessels, using murrini elements. Martin Stefanek - master of glasswork techniques - will present a method of moulding and decorating hot glass, and Jörg Hanowski will present unique, original techniques for creating spatial light objects in the technology of discharge lamps, popularly called neons. Under the supervision of curator Barbara Idzikowska, Anne Claude and Alain Jeitz Calista will carry out a multimedia project "Orangery," and Ryszard Więckowski and Katarzyna Pyka will reveal to us the subsequent stages of making stained glass. Participants of the festival will also be welcome to try the methods of decorating and shaping glass using techniques that require electric furnace, i.e. fusing and slumping, during workshops entitled "Controlled Glass." Also, feel welcome to participate in a workshop on designing glass vessels - Fast Design by Beata Mak Sobota. There, you can try your hand as a designer of an applied art form, and find out what working in the field of design is all about.
