Concerts in March – our recommendations

Data publikacji: Autor:

After the moderately attractive musical content of the first two months of 2015, the offer of March concerts will be astoundingly rich. Fans of live-playing events will have plenty to choose from in Wroclaw. Below we present our subjective choice of the most interesting ones. Classical music events and concert attractions of the Stage Songs Review will be described in a separate article.

Jazz and world music

A few weeks ago, a new jazz club was opened in Wroclaw – its name is Vertigo Jazz Club and it is located at ul. Oławska 13. We recommend visiting this place on the occasion of a concert promoting the “Jazzpo!” album by Jazzpospolita (1. of March). One day later, a fado star Ana Moura will sing in Wroclaw(2. of March, Synagogue Under White Stork). Connoisseurs of free jazz and improvised music can attend a concert of the renowned Red Trio supported by Gerard Lebik and Piotr Damasiewicz (6. of March, Firlej). Two weeks later there will be an opportunity to watch and listen to the invariably excellent Pink Freud band (19. of March, Sala Gotycka). Huun-Huur-Tu, a band known perfectly well to every fan of Tuvan throat singing, will visit us to promote their latest album (22. of March, Sala Gotycka). The repertoire of Mayra Andrade, a favourite singer of journalist Marcin Kydryński, called the "musketeer of Capo Verdean music," is not so exotic, but equally interesting – Andrade will sing for us, among others, songs from her new album "Lovely Difficult" (23. of March, Synagogue Under White Stork). And, finally, we recommend an event that was announced in February, but has been postponed till March – this will be a concert of Motion Trio, a world-famous Polish accordion band recognised for their performances with stars like Bobby McFerrin or Tomasz Stańko (24. of March, Sala Gotycka).

Stage songs

Fans of songs performed by good singers and written by educated composers and professional lyricists have a really large number of concert attractions to choose from in March. For a start, Alicja Majewska and Włodzimierz Korcz will perform together (6. of March, Concert Room of Radio Wroclaw). One day later, a recital will be performed by Ewa Bem in the same place. Two days later (and also on the next day, as the interest was huge!), Edyta Geppert will sing in the same location. A special concert on Women’s Day will be given by Ania Wyszkoni (obviously the 8. of March, Anima). Mieczysław Szcześniak, who is still in his top form, will sing songs from his last four albums (13. of March, CK Agora), and the master and classic artist of the genre – Jerzy Połomski – will perform the biggest hits from his entire 55-year-long career (15. of March, Concert Room of Radio Wroclaw). It is quite likely, however, that performances by Polish artists will be surpassed by Canadian vocalist Garou, who is adored particularly by female fans(21. of March, Centennial Hall). The Wroclaw performance will be one of the six concerts that this artist has planned during his short Polish tour.

Pop music

A good representative of middle-of-the-road music, at least recently, is Krzysztof Zalewski - on the day of his concert, he may prepare a special surprise for his female fans (8. of March, Alibi). Two days after him, Ania Dąbrowska will sing in Wroclaw (10. of March, WCK, near the Centennial Hall). And then, after a week, And then, after a week, a really long series of concerts of Polish pop stars will follow – our city will be visited successively by: Audiofeels (18. of March, Sala Gotycka), Natalia Kukulska (19. of March, Alibi), Maria Peszek (20. of March, Alibi) and Mela Koteluk, who can fill even the biggest clubs in Poland (22. of March, Eter). The month will culminate in a retrospective concert of Kasia Kowalska (26. of March, Alibi), who will celebrate the 20th anniversary of the release of her debut album "Gemini," and a performance of the Danish electro-pop band WhoMadeWho (also the 26. of March, Sala Gotycka).

Rock

Fans of more or less classic rock sounds will have plenty of opportunities to spend evenings with live music. At the beginning of the month, Dariusz Malejonek and his Maleo Reggae Rockers will arrive with the "Panny Wyklęte" project – songs being a tribute to the heroes of the Polish underground independence movement will be sung by Kasia Kowalska, Kasia Malejonek, Marika, Marcelina and the Dziewczyny band (3. of March, Sala Gotycka). On the next day, Wroclaw will be visited by Piotr Nalepa, who will present songs of his father and Mira Kubasińska together with his band (4. of March, Sala Gotycka). Two days later, there will be a special evening for Ira’s fans (6. of March, Alibi). Fans of bands associated with students’ culture will also have something for themselves – first Happysad (12th of March, Alibi) and then Koniec Świata (20. of March, Łykend) will play for them. And, in the meantime, Wroclaw will be visited by Kult, which will present their unplugged program for the next time (13. of March, WCK near the Centennial Hall). On the same day, Sebastian Riedel and his Cree will play for fans of Polish blues (Stary Klasztor). Slightly more than a week later, Lao Che will arrive to promote their new album "Dzieciom" (22. of March, Concert Room of Radio Wroclaw). And at the end of the month you should not miss a real hit – a concert of Red Box, a band that became known in the 1980s thanks to hits such as "Chenko" and returned in fantastic form a couple of years ago (25. of March, Sala Gotycka). Two days later two further rock bombs will follow, this time from the Polish scene: Lipali (Sala Gotycka) and Strachy Na Lachy (Alibi). Both concerts will take place on the same day (27. of March). And this is not the end of great attractions – on the last Sunday of the month (29. of March), Piotr Banach will present a repertoire encompassing 35 years of his career (from his former bands Dum Dum and Hey to Indios Bravos).

Metal

Metal fans can regret that the concert of Fear Factory was cancelled (the band actually cancelled the entire tour, but there is a chance that it will visit Wroclaw in the summer), but in return they will get a few others, and at least one of them should be equally attractive. First, Hunter will celebrate the 30th anniversary of its existence in Wroclaw (5. of March, Sala Gotycka). On the same day, but in a different location, an excellent band Mord'A'Stigmata will perform (Liverpool). One day later, there will be as many as three interesting concerts to choose from: the progressive death metal band In Mourning (Liverpool), Alastor – one of the oldest Polish thrash metal bands (Od Zmierzchu Do Świtu) and NoNe – a favourite band of Max Cavalera’s fans (Ciemna Strona Miasta). And how about compensation for the absence of Fear Factory? Attention: in March, the Philm band will arrive in Wroclaw with Dave Lombardo, one of the most outstanding metal drummers (maybe even the most outstanding one) in the world, who gained fame mainly as a member of Slayer – a band with a deservedly cult status. Today Lombardo cultivates his love of broken and avant garde rhythms in his own band (11. of March, Firlej). Another classic band – Axxis from Germany, which represents a much more catchy sort of metal – will visit Wroclaw three days later. This year marks the 25th anniversary of the band’s existence (14. of March, Liverpool).

Punk / Reggae / Hip-Hop

In March, punk fans will have an opportunity to dance pogo to the music of WC – a Polish punk band playing since the 1980s (8. of March, Od Zmierzchu Do Świtu). This event will be held under the title "Women’s Punk Rock Day", so female fans will be welcome in the first place. A few days later, a concert for all fans regardless of their sex will be played by Tzn. Xenna – a band that has enjoyed a cult status till today (13. of March).

At the beginning of March, reggae fans will sway to the sounds generated by Manuel Rodrigo Diaz, known as Mesajah (5. of March, Eter). Jamaican rhythms can also be heard in the club at ul. Purkyniego on the first day of spring, when Bob One & Bas Tajpan and Ras Luta & Junior Stress will perform (21. of March, Sala Gotycka).

Hip-hop fans will have something for themselves, too – at first, they can blow off some steam during a concert of Liroy (7. of March, Sala Gotycka), who is just celebrating the 20th anniversary of the release of his "Alboom." One week later, L.U.C. will play in front of his home audience, this time with Buka (15. of March, Anima). And the last recommendation for hip-hop fans is a concert of Fisz Emade Tworzywo promoting their latest album "mamut" (20. of March, Sala Gotycka).
