The renovation of the tunnel under Plac Dominikański starts. Traffic changes

The renovation of the northern tunnel under Plac Dominikański will last around six months. Construction works started on the night of 6th June and the road will have to be closed for three months. The organisation of traffic will change.

Built in 1978, car tunnels under Plac Dominikański require general renovation after so many years of use.

‘Because of its worse technical condition, the southern tunnel (on the side of the former PZU building) was already under repair in 2013,’ reminds Ewa Mazur from the Roads and City Maintenance Administration. ‘Now the time has come for the northern tunnel [closer to Galeria Dominikańska]. Renovation works will take six months, and the passageway will be completely closed for traffic for three months.

Changes in traffic organisation

The tunnel was closed on the night of 6th June (Saturday/Sunday). The time is not accidental – the intensity of traffic decreases from June till September. The repair will be divided into two stages: the tunnel will be closed from 6th June till 31st August. From 1st September till November, traffic on one lane will be restored.

As in the case of the renovation of the first tunnel, vehicular traffic will be transferred to the second lane. This means two-way traffic in the southern tunnel.

‘In order to reduce difficulties and shorten the section covered by two-way traffic, passages through tram tracks and the green square in front of the tunnel entrance and behind the tunnel exit have been designed,’ stresses Ewa Mazur from the Roads and City Maintenance Administration.

General renovation

The scope of work includes, e.g., the replacement of tunnel lighting, the fitting of a new façade, the demolition and restoration of fragments of reinforced concrete walls, the replacement and repair of dilatation joints, the repair of drainage channels, the cleaning of the drainage system and the corrosion protection of balustrades and steel structures.

Diversions in vehicular traffic will not be introduced. Passage through the intersection will be possible beside the tunnel.

Three companies submitted bids for this scope of work. The highest bid was submitted by Detal Mosty from Sułkowice (4.8 million PLN), followed closely by Plus Inwest from Żerniki Wrocławskie (almost 4.7 million PLN). The lowest price was offered by the consortium of Dromosttor Polska Sp. z o.o. from Lwówek Śląski and PBW Inżynieria from Wroclaw (3.7 million PLN), which will perform the renovation.
