The equipment has three heads: linear, sectoral and cardiology. It will serve, among others, in a broadly defined diagnosis for suspected neonatal malformations. The ultrasound will also be used to assess the health of premature infants, and to perform minor procedures, e.g. in injecting the CVC. "It is a gift from the residents of Wrocław, which we gladly hand over. For many years, the city has striven for healthier children to be born in Wrocław", said mayor Rafal Dutkiewicz.
"We haven't had an apparatus of this type here. It is very valuable to us, especially for the diagnosis of premature infants, who often have birth defects and various abnormalities in the central nervous system. It will serve to examine the heart and the abdominal cavity", emphasized Prof. Lidia Hirnle, Head of the Department of Gynecology and Obstetrics of the Clinic. Approx. 2 000 children were born in the clinic this year, and this is the best result in the last few years. Some of the newborns staying in the clinic require a thorough diagnosis and intensive treatment.
Piotr Nowicki, director of the hospital, which is now slowly coming out of debt, also could not hide his joy. "The existing equipment was badly worn and did not function properly. It needed to be replaced, which the hospital could not afford at this time", he said.
The equipment was handed over as part of the municipal programme to improve the quality of mother, child and family care, which is has been running for eight years in Wrołlaw. In 2008, the City created the programme Healthy Mother and Child, which aims to reduce the number of premature births, maternal mortality and improve the health of the child through increasing the knowledge and skills of pregnant women and parents, in the field of perinatal behaviour.
All activities under the programme of improving the quality of mother and child care for have cost the city budget approx. 3.8 million PLN.
