CODA AWARDS 2024 is the most important annual industry meeting of artists, architects and cultural managers from the USA, Canada and Europe. Their 500 representatives attended the ceremony of granting awards to the authors of distinguished works.
In the 12th edition of CODA AWARDS, 379 entries from 21 countries were received. Winners were selected in ten project categories. The Wroclaw Monument to the Unbroken Soldiers received two awards:
- the Audience Award in a worldwide voting,
- the International Jury Award in the category ‘Best work of art in a public space’.
Andrew Jerie, PhD, Director of the Zajezdnia History Centre: ‘This award is a sign of recognition not only for our history but, above all, for the extraordinary artistic value of this monument.’ The project was selected from among a few hundred works of art in public spaces throughout the world.
The Monument to the Unbroken Soldiers is a work of Wroclaw architects: Tomasz Urbanowicz and his son Konrad. The gathering of many circles around the idea of the monument – from veteran soldiers, local and government authorities to NGOs and cultural institutions – was also recognised.
The ceremonial unveiling of the monument took place on 8th May this year and was carried out by Major Wanda Kiałka – a 102-year-old soldier of the Home Army and a prisoner of the Vorkuta camp. The monument stands on the square revitalised by the Wroclaw authorities between Dyrekcyjna, Gliniana and Borowska streets.
To promote the idea of the monument, the Zajezdnia History Centre conducts educational activities about the difficult post-war years and takes care of the work.
