The situation on the rivers in Wrocław is stabilizing, with lower readings in Trestno. Latest report (as of September 20th)

Redakcja www.wroclaw.pl,

"We are facing over 80 hours of above-normal water levels on all rivers. This puts pressure on the embankments, making their observation and monitoring crucial"– the City of Wrocław Press Office released a flood situation report for Wrocław as of September 20th.

The weather forecast is optimistic for both the Czech Republic and Poland. In Wrocław, the first potential rains are forecast for next Tuesday.

  • The reservoir in Racibórz is being drained. At its peak, it was filled to 80% of its capacity. The Nysa cascade (including Otmuchów and Nysa) is also being emptied.
  • The situation on the rivers is stabilizing, with lower readings on the water gauge in Trestno (tomorrow’s forecast predicts a drop of up to half a meter). The situation on the Odra River directly affects other rivers – a lower level reduces the risk of backflow, lowering water levels across all rivers.
  • We are facing over 80 hours of above-normal water levels on all rivers. This puts pressure on the embankments, making their observation and monitoring crucial. As hydrologists remind us, the water that flooded Wrocław in 1997 did not result from the embankments overflowing but from their breaking.
  • We must monitor the situation on the soaked embankments. Over the last 24 hours, residents and services have fixed leaks, including at the Łaniewska levee and the mouth of the Bystrzyca River into the Odra.
  • On Friday afternoon, geotextile material was delivered to Janówek in Wrocław to secure the embankments. Over the next few hours, it will be laid near the Brodzki Bridge. This material helps stabilize the embankment structure (in case of leaks it prevents erosion). On-site, 50 firefighters and 100 soldiers are working.
  • Leaks on the Widawa River near Pęgowska Street have also been secured. Services (police, municipal guards, and the military) will patrol the embankments around the clock, focusing on embankment walls and foundations.
  • If a leak is detected, Crisis Management Centre inspector or Polish Waters official will decide on how it should be secured (e.g. with sandbags or geotextiles)  – considering the type and intensity of the leak.
  • On Thursday, September 19th, thanks to the combined efforts of the residents, the Fire Department, and the Territorial Defence Forces, the culvert on the Bystrzyca River was sealed at its confluence with the Odra.
