The peak flood wave on the Odra River in Wrocław is flattened and its passing will take some time

Redakcja www.wroclaw.pl,

- The flood wave has been in Wrocław for a day and a half. The city is dealing with it well. The wave on the Odra is flattened and will be prolonged. We are facing about 3.5 days of high water - said Magdalena Żmuda, president of the National Water Management Authority, during a meeting of the flood response headquarters in Wrocław on Friday, September 20th.

The prolonged duration of the flood wave concerns both the Odra and, to a lesser extent, the Bystrzyca River. Its level is maintained by the continuous release of 70 m³/s of water from the Mietków Reservoir.

- The Ślęza, Oława, Widawa, and other rivers in the region will also experience above-normal water levels for several days - explained Magdalena Żmuda, president of the National Water Management Authority.

Emergency services will patrol the embankments in Wrocław around the clock

More than 80 hours of high water is a critical time for hydraulic structures. This is why firefighters, soldiers, military police, the police, and municipal guards will patrol the foundations of the embankments 24/7.

Since last Monday, the Regional Water Management Authority (RZGW) has banned walking on the embankments. Initially, we had a several days of heavy rain, and now, in many places, the fast-flowing river current is pressing against the embankments, weakening them. The flood control headquarters, in cooperation with the RZGW, invited to Wrocław an engineer Łukasz Sierociński from Kraków, an expert in embankment safety. - The most effective observation is at the base of the embankments, the expert explained. - Services need to watch for seepage, checking if water is leaking, not only at the base but along the entire slope of the embankment.

All reports of leaks will be sent to the Crisis Management Centre (CZK)

Any concerning signs observed by patrol services will be reported to the CZK inspector, who will initially assess the situation based on video and verbal reports and deploy the appropriate number and type of personnel to seal the leaks. The decision on whether or not to use geotextile and how to restore the embankment’s integrity will be made in consultation with the on-site person in charge, based on the type of leak.

The embankments will be patrolled around the clock, with different services (municipal police, state police, military) conducting independent patrols.
