Shortly before noon, dismantling of the fountain sculpture of the swordsman in pl. Uniwersytecki started. It lasted only a few minutes and went very smoothly. The swordsman will now go to the studio, where it will be renovated. 'The statue will be cleaned with steam and water. Specialists will retouch the green patina layer, polish the sculpture, and finally cover it with an anti-corrosion layer,' lists Ewa Mazur, spokeswoman with the ZDiUM.
What is interesting, the swordsman's maintenance work will be assisted by a student of the master, who cast the sculpture 111 years ago. The swordsman will return to its pedestal in about three weeks. Its most recent conservation work was carried out a few years ago.
The monument was unveiled in 1904. According to tradition, Lederer's sculpture standing at the main building of the University of Wroclaw shows a young man who - after arriving to study in Wroclaw - lost all the property to cards. The only thing he got left was his sword. According to an anecdote, the student was none other but the author of the statue himself. The figure of a naked man stands on a marble pedestal placed in a basin of a small fountain.
