For those who live near the depot, a five-metre high noise barrier stretching for 215 metres is a significant change. The depot wakes up to life much earlier than most of us and also goes to sleep late. Now its functioning is more comfortable for neighbours.
Reconstruction of the Borek depot – why does MPK need a bigger facility?
The Borek Tram Depot is located on 209 Powstańców Śląskich Street. After the reconstruction, it accommodates 130 trams. The considerable effort of rebuilding it at the cost of PLN 50 million was necessary due to the expansion of MPK's fleet.
The operator needs more trams to serve new lines – it has transported passengers through Popowice since last spring and to Nowy Dwór since the late summer of 2023. Therefore, it purchased 46 Moderus Gamma and 40 Pes 146N vehicles.
Expansion of the tram depot – what happened there?
Having been underway since 2022, the renovation of Borek is coming to an end. The depot can boast new solutions and facilities for both vehicles and MPK Wrocław’s employees.
What's new at the Borek depot:
- the depot entrances and exits were rebuilt and expanded;
- the depot accommodates 23 more tram sets now;
- a daily service hall was built;
- there is an additional facility for the storage of spare parts;
- an office hall was built to provide employees with better working conditions;
- a fire reservoir is available;
- the underground infrastructure was rebuilt.
Safer and more convenient tram service
The trams are cleaned after work, but they also undergo a quick inspection and minor repairs. This takes place in the daily service hall. Major renovations are carried out in another hall.
The new daily service hall contains modern stations with safe access to the roofs of the vehicles, where a large part of the low-floor tram equipment is located. In addition, deep inspection pits located there will make it possible to work comfortably on the carriages.
Witold Woźny, President of MPK Wrocław: ‘The safety of the workers is our priority, so the working platform was grounded and connected with rails. In addition, safety barriers were built to protect workers from falling in the rooftop work zone, and an automatic traction power cut-off system was provided at the entrance to the platform.
Reconstruction of the Borek depot – this is not the end
Part of the modernisation work at the Borek depot will last until next year.
Witold Woźny, President of MPK Wrocław: ‘The reconstruction of the track system between the route and the depot, the modernisation of the depot's power supply system and the reconstruction of the monitoring system are still to be done. We will also ensure that there is more greenery.
The accurate gross cost of modernisation of the Borek depot is PLN 49,437,993.
Repairs at the Gaj depot
MPK is simultaneously investing in a depot located at the intersection of Ślężna and Kamienna streets. The renovation of Hall 2 has been completed, and the modernisation of Hall 1 will begin next year.
‘As part of this task, we will renovate the tracks inside the hall and install new switches, a new underfloor wheel lathe and a rotary crane. We will buy a lift and build a working platform. The hall will gain a new life and will be a safer and more comfortable place to work,’ stresses Przemysław Nowicki, Vice-President of MPK Wrocław.
