Many changes in railway traffic since 26.04

Upon amendment of the train schedule, the key stage of the modernisation of the E 59 railway line to Poznań begins in Wroclaw on the 26th of April. This means that only one of the three tracks can be used by trains, and passengers should be prepared for important changes.

The most important works concerning 50 kilometres of the E 59 route from the border of the province to Wroclaw are already finished. Many results of this can already be seen in Wroclaw – for example, a new overpass over ul. Grabiszyńska (one structure). Now, however, the key phase of works is about to begin – it will consist of the reconstruction of two tracks situated on the neighbouring facility, which allows around 250 trains per day to travel there. At the same time, works will be performed in connection with the fitting of new railway traffic control devices, switches, tracks and overhead line equipment.

On the Wrocław – Poznań route, sections from Wroclaw to the border of the Lower Silesia Province and from Poznań to Czempiń are being modernised. The modernisation of the middle section of the line will be financed by PLK from CEF (Connecting Europe Facility) – a new financial mechanism of the EU.

A new train schedule for passengers

For the period of reconstruction of the important overpass in Wroclaw, PKP Polskie Linie Kolejowe S.A. and carriers prepared a train schedule that, in spite of the closure of two of the three tracks, will provide access to the centre of the city to a maximum number of trains. This is possible thanks to the already completed part of the modernisation of the Wroclaw – Poznań line: new tracks, switches and railway traffic control devices, the reconstructed bridge on the Oder and overpasses. In addition, a new railway stop – Wrocław Grabiszyn – was opened on the line from Wałbrzych. A new platform for trains departing towards Wroclaw Gądów was prepared on the Wrocław Zachodni station, and tracks and switches were renovated and prepared for passenger traffic on the Wrocław Gądów station. Additional traffic control devices will improve the capacity of the line towards Wrocław Główny.

The new infrastructure will remain in Wroclaw on a permanent basis and will be used in regional and urban traffic.

Information about the new train schedule is already available

The train schedule that becomes valid on the 26th of April was made available on Easter. Passengers are also reminded of the changes via brochures and posters. Thanks to the co-operation between the administrator of the infrastructure and carriers, over 90% of trains arriving in Wroclaw from the west have remained in the schedule, including all commuter trains. Only 14 out of the 239 trains have been withdrawn, and others have been planned so as to provide maximum convenience to travellers.

The most important changes refer to the following trains:

trains from Dzierżoniów will arrive at and depart from the Wrocław Grabiszyn stop. Access to the city centre and the Wrocław Główny station will be provided by city transport service and additional buses planned by Koleje Dolnośląskie and Polskie Linie Kolejowe.

except for two pairs of trains, trains from Trzebnica will arrive at and depart from Wrocław Nadodrze and Wrocław Mikołajów stations.

trains from Szklarska Poręba, Jelenia Góra and Wałbrzych will arrive at the Wrocław Zachodni station and then, without any stops, at Wrocław Główny. Only the Śnieżka train to Warszawa Wschodnia will travel via Wrocław Nadodrze without stopping at Wrocław Główny.

Detailed information about the train schedule is available on schedule posters, by carriers and on the Internet, e.g., at www.plk-sa.pl, www.rozklad.plk-sa.pl , www.kolejedolnoslaskie.eu/pl/rozklad-jazdy.

Modernisation of the E 59 line

The E 59 line is an international main transport line running from Malmö and Ystad via Świnoujście, Poznań and Wrocław and the border crossing in Chałupki to Vienna. Works on the Lower Silesian section are to be finished by December 2015. After the modernisation, trains will be capable of travelling at a maximum speed of 160 km/h (in the case of passenger trains) and 120 km/h (in the case of cargo trains).

Scope of modernisation:

- 58 km of the double-track line with overhead line equipment,

- 12 passenger stations and stops,

- 23 railway crossings,

- 21 platforms

- 100 road structures, including 7 bridges and 10 overpasses in Wroclaw,

The cost of the investment is 1.3 milliard PLN, with almost 800 million PLN provided from EU funds.
