Steven Spielberg: perfectionist in Wroclaw

Steven Spielberg, one of the most eminent American film directors, is known to control every single detail on the set. This is certainly going to be the case in Wroclaw, where his crew is shooting his new feature under the working title "St James Place".

The film is conceived as a Cold War espionage thriller. It tells the story of Francis Gary Powers, a pilot, whose U2 plane was taken down by the Russians during a reconnaissance flight in 1960. Jason Donovan, the film's main hero, works as a lawyer hired by the CIA to negotiate the pilot's release. The shooting is expected to take 5 to 6 days, and Polish extras will also participate in it.

Steven Spielberg to shoot in Wroclaw

Kamiński

As he shoots his films, Spielberg always wants to have full control over the entire project, which is why he works with his trusted crew. As usual, Janusz Kamiński will stand behind the camera. For Spielberg’s DP, it is also an opportunity to return to the city in which he grew up. Kamiński comes from Ziębice, and he attended 10. Secondary School in Wroclaw.

Spielberg's films often feature Tom Hanks, so he is also likely to appear on the set in ul Kurkowa. Music to Spielberg's films has been composed by John Williams, who has created soundtracks to twenty-three of his films so far (and received three Academy Awards for: "E.T.", "Jaws" and "Schindler's List").

Spielberg never cooks

A film set is now being put up in ul Kurkowa, but Spielberg's crew will also probably work at the Audiovisual Technology Centre, formerly known as the Feature Film Studio. They will bring all the necessary equipment to Poland, including decorations, costumes and catering.

But who knows, the famous film director may also explore the city the way he did it in 2004, when he was on his quest for outdoor location to "Munich". And although he did not shoot the film in Wroclaw, he was seen gorge on pierogi with potatoes and cheese at Bazylia. This is quite likely because, as he admitted in "Vanity Fair", he is not a good cook. “I can make a couple of things. I can make matzo brei, and I make a breakfast sandwich, like a Big Daddy McMuffin. Those are the only two things I can make. My wife eats them.” Spielberg admitted in "VF Hollywood" to eating almost everything. "I make different movies, and I like food the way I like movies. Each dish must be something different".

Spielberg likes horse racing

The American director is plain unlucky. He will not be able to attend any competition at the Wroclaw Horse Racing Track due to a mid-season break. Spielberg is a horse racing fan and he also invests in Delaware's Biscuit Stables; his best horse, Atswhatimtalkingabout, won the Kentucky Derby in 2003.

The American crew will take to the streets of Wroclaw in the second half of November. The Wroclaw Film Commission has been taking part in the preparations to shoot the film in Wroclaw since May. The film is expected to have its US première in October 2015.
