Play with Glass in Wroclaw

Glass – a brittle substance that is difficult to process and transport and requires proper light and setting, but, at the same time, is enchanting and interesting – has its own festival in Wroclaw.

Play with Glass – European Glass Festival starts for the 3rd time. 18 artists from 14 European countries will take part in this year's main exhibition "Animal Planet", which will be held once more at the Wroclaw Główny Railway Station. A new element of the festival has been introduced this year: an artist who has never worked with glass has been invited to take part in the main exhibition and make their “debut” at the festival by presenting a work prepared by means of a glazing technique. During this year’s festival, this artist will be Małgorzata ET BER Warlikowska. (The exhibition will be open from the 13th of October, 5:00 p.m. – Wroclaw Główny Railway Station – Session Room.)

Debut of the Festival

During the festival, a young Japanese artist Masami Hirohata will present her debut exhibition "stíl(ə)lάɪf". Every year, the author of an individual exhibition shown at the festival invites an art school student to present their works. This year, Masami Hirohata has been invited by Jens Gussek, a professor at the Faculty of Glass of the University of Applied Sciences in Koblenz. In "stíl(ə)lάɪf", the young artist will face the worn-out and apparently unattractive motif of still life (open from the 13th of October, 7:00 p.m.).

The design "Casual Reminder" by her teacher Jens Gussek from Koblenz will be exhibited in BWA Wroclaw – Gallery of Contemporary Art (open till the 18th of October).

Emotional self-portraits

Glass & multimedia installations and objects made by means of the unique technique of "glasses from lost forms" will form an exhibition prepared by Beata Stankiewicz-Szczerbik specially for the National Museum in Wroclaw. Regarded as one of the most talented and most interesting individualities in the field of Polish artistic glass, the artist will present another part of her quest for new dimensions of glass. The invitation to prepare an exhibition in the atrium of the National Museum in Wroclaw inspired Beata Stankiewicz-Szczerbik to create an entirely unique design that combines sculptures made by means of glazing techniques and the modern language of a multimedia message (open from the 8th till the 31st of October).

Glass Products

In Socato Art Gallery at Pl. Solny, you can view “Wyroby Szklane" (“Glass Products”) by Jerzy Chodurski. Angels and Birds, Angel-Bird Objects and other sculptures by Jerzy Chodurski attract our sight and surprise us with their delicate beauty. Characterised by the sparing use of colours and forms, sometimes shaped from one thick glass panel, but more frequently built of a few blocks, Chodurski's works reveal the lucid/transparent mystery of glass – the artist’s favourite material that he has transformed in his own way for almost 40 years (open from the 9th till the 18th of October).

Play with Glass

The program of the Play with Glass festival includes, among others, exhibitions, workshops, excursions, meetings with artists, a seminar, the Day of Open Workshops, the Open Door Day at the Chair of the Faculty of Ceramics and Glass of the E. Geppert Academy of Fine Arts and "Glass Bus".

We will see:

  • "Hand-made works" – Beata Damian-Speruda – Centre of Utility Arts. Centre of Innovation – Academy of Fine Arts, Wroclaw – open from 14.10.2014 till 24.10.2014
  • "Alea iacta est" – Igor Wójcik – gallery of contemporary art – open from 15.10.2014 till 31.10.2014
  • "Design by Pejga" – Magdalena Pejga – M Odwach Art Gallery – open from 14.10.2014 till 19.10.2014
  • ”Bestiary” – Renata Pawlik-Kiebdój – Versus Art Gallery – open from 16.10.2014 till 29.11.2014

From among other festival events, it is particularly worth mentioning the Glass Shop Window Project that mobilised students of the Chair of Glass of the Academy of Fine Arts in Wroclaw to act together. Entering the living space of the city with their designs, they can meet recipients of their artistic offers face to face. The window of a shop or a cafe at a busy street offers much larger possibilities of presenting a work of art in public than a gallery or a museum does.

Prepared by Anita Bialic and Professor Kazimierz Pawlak, "Play with Glass" – European Glass Festival was included in Wroclaw’s application for the title of the European Capital of Culture 2016. European Glass Festival is organised by the Fly with Art Foundation and the BB Gallery in co-operation with the Academy of Fine Arts and the Association of Polish Artists and Designers in Wroclaw and the Municipality of Wroclaw.
