David Gilmour in Poland

So far, we've had the opportunity to see David Gilmour in Poland only once. In 2006, during the celebrations of the 26th anniversary of Solidarity the artist performed in the Gdansk Shipyard with a concert 'Space of Freedom.' Gilmour has then just released his third solo album On an Island, and played in Gdansk with a 38-member orchestra of the Baltic Philharmonic under the direction of Zbigniew Preisner. Apart from the philharmonic orchestra, he was accompanied by other outstanding musicians, including another member of the Pink Floyd, keyboardist Richard Wright (who died two years later), as well as Leszek Możdżer. The presence of both Poles was not only a courtesy touch for the organisers of the show. Both Preisner and Możdżer took part in the studio recordings of Gilmour's solo album, On An Island. His performance in the Gdansk Shipyard later was released on CD and DVD.

The Pink Floyd have never made it

It is worth stressing that David Gilmour home formation, the Pink Floyd, one of the greatest legends of worldwide rock, have never made it to Poland, even when in 1994 they promoted their album The Division Bell, and played their fantastic concerts as close to the Polish border as in the Czech capital, Prague. However, in addition to Gilmour, Poland hosted Roger Waters, the front man of the Pink Floyd. He came to Poland in 2006, and interestingly, just a day before the Gdansk concert of David Gilmour. It was, however, quite an unusual visit because Waters came to our country... with an opera. His work entitled "Ca Ira" had its world première in Poznan, and the show was directed by Janusz Józefowicz. Waters came to Poland with "regular" concerts five and seven years later. In April 2011, he played two concerts in the Lodz Atlas Arena, and in August 2013 he played in the National Stadium in Warsaw.

Also to visit Poland was Nick Mason, drummer of the Pink Floyd, but he came not as a musician, but as a writer. Mason visited our country in October 2005, promoting his book titled "Pink Floyd. My memories."

David Gilmour and the Pink Floyd

Gilmour joined the Pink Floyd after they debuted with the record The Piper At The Gates of Dawn. He replaced Syd Barret, who was slowly descending into a drug addiction. The next album entitled "Saucerful Of Secrets" featured David Gilmour as a fully-fledged member of the band. Gilmour recorded many albums with the Pink Floyd, which are now the canon of world rock - including the famous "The Dark Side Of The Moon" and "The Wall". He went through the departure of Roger Waters in 1985, and the litigations regarding the right to name. Recently, he and Mason published the album The Endless River under the old name.

On the other hand, Gilmour started his solo career in 1978 with the album "David Gilmour" and before "On An Island," he released yet another record - the outstanding "About Face" from 1984 r. In his oeuvre are also joint recordings with the band The Orb ("Metallic Spheres").

David Gilmour is generally considered one of the most outstanding guitarists in the history of rock music.
