The work on Steven Spielberg’s new film is in full swing: extras have tried on costumes and props since Wednesday, and technical staff build scenography at ul. Kurkowa and ul. Ptasia.

‘Sorry, we can’t disclose any details. We can’t let anyone in, we can’t show anything,’ that’s how security guards and technical staff warn snoopers off.

Trying costumes on

Although shooting will begin in mid-November, the site attracts many curious persons already now. Waldemar, an inhabitant of Kurkowa street, instructs those who want to listen: ‘The main offices are over there, here they’ve pitched a tent, and there are some bricks being painted round the corner. I know everything, because I go there for a walk with my dog a few times every day.’

In the former building of the narrow-gauge railway station belonging to the Parish of St. Boniface at Pl. Staszica and in parish rooms, costumes for extras have been tried on since Wednesday. This will continue for the next few days. ‘They try clothes on and check how they fit, but I can’t tell you more, because I’m not allowed to,’ says one of the extras anonymously. ‘This is for men – women tried their costumes on in Germany,’ he adds. Arrows on the fence of the parish and information boards show extras the way to rooms where clothes are tried on, but technical staff do not confirm anything.

Berlin Wall at ul. Ptasia

Technical staff work on scenography. The front part of the building was added in the hole left after the demolition of the tenement house at ul. Kurkowa. On one of the walls of the tenement house, a new mural has appeared: the symbol of Sozialistische Einheitspartei Deutschlands – the Socialist Unity Party of Germany that ruled in the former German Democratic Republic. SED was formed in 1946 as a result of the merger of the Communist Party of Germany (KPD) and the Social Democratic Party of Germany (SPD), which took place under the pressure of occupational Soviet troops.

The Berlin Wall is being built at ul. Ptasia – employees are painting it with spray and preparing wire entanglements to crown the top of the wall. The border barrier is also ready.

‘St. James Place’ – new film by Steven Spielberg

It will be a spy thriller from the Cold War period. The film tells the story of Francis Gary Powers – a pilot whose U2 aircraft was shot down by the Russians during a reconnaissance flight in 1960. The main character of the film is James Donovan – a lawyer hired by the CIA who negotiates the liberation of the pilot with the Russians. The cast includes a number of Hollywood cinema stars: Tom Hanks, Mark Rylance, Amy Ryan, Alan Alda and Eve Hewson. Shooting begins in the second half of November. The script was written by Joel and Ethan Coen on the basis of the original text of Matt Charman, and the cinemaman is Janusz Kamiński.
