MIASTOmovie: wro 2015 – program of the festival

A film about Wroclaw to be shot within 48 hours and the MIASTOmovie: Wro festival are two initiatives undertaken by the European Capital of Culture (ESK). ‘These projects are to serve inhabitants, to support film education, to develop interest among the youngest listeners and to continue’, stresses Roman Gutek, the director of the Nowe Horyzonty Cinema and the film curator of ESK 2016.

Continuity is an important element of the film strategy of ESK, because, as Roman Gutek assures, a series of initiatives will be continued beyond 2016, except the European Film Awards gala that will hosted by Wroclaw exactly on the 10th of December 2016. Even though this ceremony will be closed to ordinary Wroclaw inhabitants, cinema fans have little to complain about, because the director of the Nowe Horyzonty Cinema has already announced meetings with masters of European cinema and screenings of films that received awards at successive editions of the festival and films nominated for statuettes.

Shoot a film in 48 hours

Wroclaw inhabitants can also take part in fantastic projects, such as the 48 Hour Film Project. These 48 hours are the time-limit during which participants have to shoot a film (it can be made by means of a mobile phone or a camera). ‘Wroclaw will play one of the main roles in these films,’ explains Agnieszka Sękowska from the Przestrzeń Filmowa (Film Space) Foundation. ‘Everybody who would like to participate should make some initial preparations already now (workshops will be run by professional filmmakers on the upcoming weekend of the 11th-12th of April), register (not later than by the 16th of March) and then demonstrate their virtuosity and imagination (the more so because on the first day of shooting – from the 17th of March, 6:00 p.m. – they will draw a film genre and will get to know three mandatory elements: the prop, the text and the main character). All ready films will be shown in the Nowe Horyzonty Cinema from the 21st till the 23rd of April, and the winner will be known on the 25th of April.

All information about the 48 Hour Film Project will be available here.

MIASTOmovie: Wro – the city from a different perspective

During this festival (from the 16th till the 19th of April), we will not only watch documentaries on urban topics; we will also have an opportunity to take part in debates and meetings concerning the city, the changes that have occurred in it in the last few years, dead places or those places that used to function as certain symbols, but time has changed their original function. ‘The motto of this year’s edition of the festival is "Miasto z odzysku" ("The regained city") and the problem of the recovered land,’ says Lech Moliński from the Wroclaw Film Foundation. ‘We intend to show documentaries about burning problems and issues of importance to Wroclaw inhabitants,’ adds Paweł Kosuń, the president of the Foundation. The audience will see a number of films from Germany (e.g., about a ghetto housing estate in Cologne on the 17th of April, about the biggest squat in Caracas, Venezuela, which no longer exists today, on the 19th of April, or about a crisis in Spain that affected many areas of human activity on the 16th of April). Guests of MIASTOmovie: Wro will be film producers and Sandra Liliana Rios – an employee of the City Office in Medellín, Colombia (the 17th of April). ‘This city grappled with huge social problems, but is undergoing significant changes today,’ explains Lech Moliński. Another promising attraction is the VOID project. ‘We talk about the places that lost their identity during World War II and have never regained it since then, such as Plac Społeczny and Plac Muzealny squares,’ tells Kuba Żary from the Wroclaw Film Foundation. Discussions on these places will involve a few months of research and meetings with experts in the Wroclaw Contemporary Museum.

All details of projects covered by MIASTOmovie: Wro will be available on the organiser’s website.
