European Capital of Culture reaches halfway point

Wroclaw has held the title of the European Capital of Culture already for half a year. The organisers summarise the first six months: 650 events, 2.1 million participants, more than 18,000 publications about Wrocław in various media. ‘Now there are another equally interesting six months ahead of us.’ announces Krzysztof Maj, Director of ECC Wroclaw 2016.

‘ECC means not only huge events, but also commitment of the city's inhabitants,’ stresses Maj. 'As many as 431 projects have been submitted under the MicroGrants programme; only at Barbara, where various workshops and meetings are held, have we had more than 10,000 visitors.’

ECC under sociological research

Sociologists from the University of Wroclaw conducting surveys among the city’s inhabitants participating in ECC events made an attempt to summarise the first six months of Wroclaw as ECC. After each event-packed weekend, you can fill in an online questionnaire prepared by them.

‘We asked respondents how they perceive and evaluate ECC in the rhythm of 12 weekends,’ explain sociologists Jacek Pluta and Katarzyna Kajdanek.

Events of the European Capital of Culture attract many young persons – around 50-70% of respondents are from 17 to 35 years’ old, and around 14-23% are from 36 to 45 years’ old. Persons with higher education account for 62-80% of respondents.

’The inauguration of ECC – “Awakening” – was heavily criticised by respondents, but that was only a failed beginning,’ says Jacek Pluta, Ph.D. ‘Further events have met with much better reception – the “Flow” performance had good reviews, and David Gilmour’s concert has been recognised as the best event so far.

More than 35% of respondents write that they saw things they had not seen before thanks to ECC. Respondents usually attend concerts and open-air events. The surveys have shown that the European Night of Literature attracted a large number of women, who accounted for 80% of respondents.

‘Many respondents decide to leave their answer to the open question concerning the evaluation of ECC,’ says Katarzyna Kajdanek, Ph.D. 'These answers have nothing to do with hate – they are very long and full of reflections. Even if they contain criticism, it is constructive, because respondents feel that they are co-hosts of ECC and expect high-quality events and good organisation. They want ECC to be the hallmark of the city and make them feel proud of Wroclaw.

What’s ahead of us during the next 6 months

The halfway point reached by ECC is a preparation for the autumn part of the programme. 'The autumn events will prepare us for a calmer period and an invitation to indoor spaces, including those that have been recently discovered or renovated,’ announces Dominika Kawalerowicz from ECC.
