The spring is coming in a month, but the Wroclaw Zoo is already benefiting from this year's extremely mild winter. The zoo keepers are now working on a number of new facilities for the animals. Visitors are also in for something new.
The Afrykarium is bustling with activity. The hall behind the conference room, which is also known as the African swamp, features a tank with an island for eight African helmeted turtles transferred from the Terrarium. Desert turtles have been moved to the beach next to the descent leading to the Red Sea tank.
The two manatees, Armstrong and Gumla, are now being fed and exercised from a new landing.
Janush, an African penguin chick, is now shooting up. The chick promenades in good weather, and is likely to join its flock in spring.
The Terrarium is also undergoing change. Reticulated pythons are now enjoying a new home and a large pool in the mezzanine.
Renovation work is being carried out in the tank for European pond turtles at the Odrarium. Its watery part is going to expand to a nearby Oder oxbow lake. The turtles are expected to arrive as soon as they wake up in spring. Educational features for outdoor water play for children are now being installed at the Odrarium.
The pelican pond has a new nesting island. "The pelicans will be happy when they arrive in spring. They need to have a place where they feel undisturbed. They were often seen to chase off their zoo keepers," says Joanna Kij from the Wroclaw Zoo Marketing Department. Nesting boxes are being mounted all over the zoo to attract wild birds. While old boxes are now being renovated, the new ones will be installed any time soon.
A batch of exotic tree branches has just been delivered to decorate the pavilions and the exhibition. A fair size of the shipment will be transferred to a brand new pavilion for Komodo dragons.
