The faithfulness of a dog is proverbial. Devoted, helpful and always by your leg. But, unfortunately, a dog is dependent on a human being. It will not take itself for a walk and does not like being alone. For a cat, sitting alone in four walls is not a problem. It can sleep for a long time and relieves itself in a tray. This is the reason of its growing popularity.
Self-sufficient cat
"When I moved to Wroclaw, I longed for home. After work I came back to the empty flat. And it was a cat that solved the problem. A dog would suffer, as I couldn’t take it for a walk on time. The cat has a litter tray, and when I leave a dish of water and food for it, it can sit alone for many hours," says Monika. "And when I come back home, I have company".
The dark side of popularity
The statistical data from the Shelter for Homeless Animals in Wroclaw confirm that cats slowly become the most popular pet animals. A few years ago, there were around one hundred cats in relation to 300 dogs in the shelter. Today their numbers are almost equal – in December, 270 cats stayed there. "That’s a certain sign of the times. We live quickly and comfortably. And cats are more comfortable pets, especially for working singles. You don’t have to take a cat for a walk and you don’t have to come back home to walk it in due time," says Zofia Białoszewska, Director of the Shelter for Homeless Animals in Wroclaw.
In the cellar and on the couch
In Wroclaw there are many "pro-cat" organisations. They help, feed and cure. There is also a municipal program for sterilisation of female cats. Special cat booths are built in many places in allotment gardens. Owners of tenement houses who decide to open cellar windows to cats appreciate their effectiveness in fighting with rats. There is also an increasing number of coach cats. Even in some dormitories, students agree upon keeping cats, even if this is contrary to the valid regulations. "He doesn’t disturb anyone. He doesn’t leave my room, doesn’t make it dirty because he has his own tray, and doesn’t make noise," says Patrycja. "When students party all night long, they do more damage than my cat does."
Cat club among editors
Cats are also a charming topic to talk about. Even from our own experience in www.wroclaw.pl, we can say that the cat "club" within the editorial staff is extremely strong. We can talk about our cats without end. We show photos of our pets to one another and exchange advice on how to care about them. And how about others? They are forced to listen.
