What's Up at the Square in August? [EVENTS' LIST]

The open air cinema and the beach at pl. Solny are drawing to their close, but guests at Wrocław Market Square should have no reason to complain about lack of entertainment, as each August weekend will feature some attractions. The list includes, among others, choir concerts and the BuskerBus 2014.

  • July 29th - August 3rd - beach and cinema as a part of the 14. MFF T-Mobile Nowe Horyzonty Festival

For the thirsty - coffee and cold drinks, for kids - sand boxes, and for the active - a trampoline and a mini water slide. The beach is open until Sunday, August 3rd, from 10.00 to 22.00, the waterslide until 21.00, and the trampolines until 19.00.

The Market Square will host film screenings at 22:00 until August 3rd. Admission free. Programme:

  • August 3rd - IS CRAFT WORK ART? Performances by a certified embroideress master from the Tri-City

Alicja Stańska-Stryjecka has graduated from the oldest embroidery school, Ecole Lesage Paris, and cooperates with artisans in creating functional art: from furniture and accessories, through embroidered images to clothing. In several Polish cities, including Wrocław, she is searching for an answer if craft work is art.

This Sunday, from 10.00 to 18.00, at the corner of ul. Biskupia and ul. Oławska, the embroideress will work on the next stages of an embroidery prepared with a traditional method, Luneville. The embroidery's theme is based on one of the works of Per Dahlberg - a painter and illustrator.

  • August 7th, 21st and 28th - blood donation campaign

A bus of the Regional Centre for Blood Donation and Haemotherapy will await all willing blood donors from 12.00 to 16.30 at pl. Solny.

  • August 8th - 9th, Singing Europe 2014

Several choristers from the Academic Choir of the University of Gdańsk, the Astrolabium Choir, the Academic Choir of the University of Warsaw, as well as the Medici Cantantes Choir of the Medical University in Wrocław will meet in the capital of Lower Silesia to perfect their singing techniques and to share artistic experience. The choirs will master Giuseppe Verdi's Requiem. On August 8th at 20.00, all willing will be welcome to create one great festival choir, together with 130 singers from Gdańsk, Warszawa and Toruń.

The final concert will take place on August 9th at 19.00 in the church of St. Mary Magdalene's. The Symphonic Orchestra NFM will performMessa da Requiem conducted by Paul McCreesh, renowned for his many artistic creations, and the soloists will be Ewa Vesin, Edyta Kulczak, Robert Murray and Jan Martínik. Admission free.

  • August 1st and 10th - celebrations of the 70th anniversary of the Warsaw Uprising

For the fifth time this year, the Historical Initiative Association, along with the Historical Reconstruction Group Festung Breslau organise celebrations of the outbreak of the Warsaw Uprising. Coming specially to Wrocław are historical reconstruction groups specializing in commemorating and cultivating the memory of insurrectionists' battalions: "Chrobry I", "Miotła" and the famous "Parasol" who hold in their possession the original Uprising keepsakes. The reconstruction's special attraction will be the original armoured vehicle, SDKFZ 251, and a performance of stunt men.

The Warsaw Insurrectionists who are now living in Wrocław have already confirmed their participation.

Historical reconstruction - a multimedia performance event, with an expert historian live comment. The performance will present the attempts to save the shreds of "normal" life in Warsaw's war hell. The programme includes, among others, a theme of insurrectionist wedding ceremony, in a break between fights. The audience will also see how the insurrectionist post worked, and also a reconstruction of the tragedy from August 13th,1944 when an explosion of a 450-kilo bomb at Warsaw's ul. Kilińskiego killed a minimum of 300 Polish soldiers and civillians.

  • August 14th - The Polish Army Day

  • August 15th - MotoClassic Wrocław, i.e. the Antique Vehicles Rally

Though the event itself will take place at the Topacz Castle, the vehicles will also be demonstrated at Wrocław Market Square. This year's presentation will be divided in two cathegories: vehicles before 1945 and from years 1945 - 1980. The opening of the Rally - a parade of the antique vehicles through the streets of Wrocław

ca. 14.30 - presentation of the vehicles by Wrocław Operaca. 16.00 - start from Wrocław Opera towards the Market Squareca. 16.30 - presentation of the vehicles at pl. Gołębi at the Market Square, together with a contest for the most beautiful vehicle of the Rallyca. 18.30 - departure from the Market Square towards the Centennial Hall through Ostrów Tumskica. 20.30 - presentation of the vehicles at the Centennial Hall at the square in front of the Spireca. 22.00 - special show of the multimedia fountain at the Pergola by the Centennial Hall

  • August 22nd - 24th - The BuskerBus 2014

18th edition of the street artists' festival, attracting to Lower Silesia performers from all over the world. The buskers will present performances, happenings, sing, juggle, play various instruments, dance and encourage the audience to have win with them. Street art is performance bordering on circus art, theatre and village fair spectacles. The Busker Bus Festival is organised in several cities and changes into a tournee of a large, colourful artistic group.

  • August 29th - 31st - The Craft of Hand Fest in the open air

In Wrocław there are at least a few tens of handicraft artists. Each of them has its own, individual style and creates individually designed objects. They will be available at Wrocław Market Square during summer vacation from 12.00 to 20.00

  • August 30th - The Parade of Hope

A colourful and cheerful procession, i.e. the Parade of Hope, will start from the square behind the Arena mall at 16:00. Everyone is welcome to join in. Ca. 16:30 the parade will reach pl. Gołębi, and starting from ca. 16:40 the fun begins. A special stage will host performances of various dance, children's and musical groups. There will also be mounted City Guards, performances of clowns, magicians and the majorettes from Leszno. The finale will be featured by Honorata Skarbek, a teenage star of the new generation. The event will finish at 19:00

It is organised by the Save Children With Cancer Foundation, together with the City Guards.
