Under One Ruler: J.S. Bach's Polish Cantatas
5 p.m., admission free
Difficult as it may to believe, music by J.S. Bach resounded in two great political centres of its time (Poland and Saxony) and also bore witness to religious conflicts between Catholics and Protestants. The diplomatic efforts of 18th-century European dynasties may be as plain as a pikestaff, but the occasional "Polish cantatas" by J.S. Bach still feature as an extremely subtle and spiritual theme in the multi-faceted fabric of its time. The first cantata (BWV 198) was composed in 1727 to commemorate the funeral service of Augustus II Strong's wife, an ardent Protestant, also known as the "Saxon pillar of prayer". In his attempt to win their royal grace, J.S. Bach devoted two birthday cantatas to the royal couple (BWV 206 dated to 1736 and BWV 214 dated to 1733), and both works will be performed at the event.
