Viaduct near Korona Shopping Centre closed for half a year

On the night of 5th February (Friday/Saturday), the viaduct in the course of ul. Kowalska near the Korona Shopping Centre will be closed for vehicular traffic. Changes are awaiting drivers and passengers of public transport service. The works will last around 4–6 months.

At the beginning of February, as has been announced for months, the renovation of the viaduct at ul. Kowalska starts. The works include the replacement of road and pavement surfaces, the repair of supports and the application of anti-corrosion coating, the repair of concrete elements (e.g., stairs), the replacement of the water insulation system and energy-intensive barriers on and under the bridge and on access roads. In addition, new LED lighting and a municipal service channel will appear.

The Administration of Roads and City Maintenance [ZDiUM] stresses that pedestrian traffic will be allowed on the viaduct for as long as possible. For the time being, the accurate date of closing the passage for pedestrian traffic is unknown. The restoration of vehicular traffic is scheduled for June. Bus lines 118 and 242 will have a different route.

‘Pedestrian traffic will be maintained for the most part of the construction period, until the repair of stairs begins, ‘ says Ewa Mazur from ZDiUM. She adds that the viaduct built in 1978 is in very poor technical condition. This refers in particular to its structure, supports, the 7.5 m wide road and 2.8 m and 1 m wide pavements.

Detours for drivers

From Saturday, drivers travelling towards Al. Poprzeczna will go off ul. Kowalska to ul. Bolesława Krzywoustego towards Warsaw. After around 700 m, they will drive onto the viaduct over ul. Jana III Sobieskiego, then they will go off to ul. Bolesława Krzywoustego and will continue towards the junction of ul. Kowalska and Al. Poprzeczna.

  • Drivers heading towards Kowale and Swojczyce housing estates from ul. Kowalska will go via ul. Kowalska, Al. Poprzeczna and ul. Bolesława Krzywoustego. The length of the detour is 1,500 metres.
  • The general contractor is Plus Inwest P. Żygadło, and the cost of the renovation will be over 4.5 million PLN.

6th February: renovation of the viaduct in the course of ul. Kowalska starts

  • From 6th February 2021 (Saturday), the repair of the viaduct in the course of ul. Kowalska over ul. Krzywoustego will start. The routes of bus line 118 and night line 242 will change.
  • Line 118 buses riding from Swojczyce towards Kromera and night line 242 buses riding from the Kowale terminus towards Kromera will run on a detour route from ul. Kowalska via ul. Krzywoustego (towards Psie Pole) and the overpass over ul. Jana III Sobieskiego and back via ul. Krzywoustego.
  • In the reverse direction, the route of the above line will not change.
