Portrait of a Lady on Fire
A work by French director Céline Sciamma, who will join us for the opening of the New Horizons Festival, together with Adèle Haenel – one of the two leading actresses. Her Portrait of a Lady on Fire was the greatest discovery in the Cannes competition. It is a very delicate, intricate and – I’m not afraid nor ashamed to use the word – beautiful piece, and despite the fact that the plot is set in the 17th century, it still remains current and valid.

Fire Will Come
A film featured in the New Horizons International Competition. We try not to favour any competition films, but I believe that the audience of the New Horizons is independent and reliant on their own tastes – as such, they should not be swayed by my personal sympathies and suggestions. Fire Will Come is a Spanish film made by young director Oliver Laxe. His previous film – Mimosas – was also featured in our competition a couple of years ago. His latest work is an example of slow cinema, as well as a film that touches upon themes rarely present on the silver screen – old age, passing and death, all in accordance with the rhythm of nature. A beautiful, small film that was my personal discovery in Cannes, and that gave me great pleasure.

Deerskin
French director Quentin Dupieux plays with cinema and the convention of the western genre in a witty, perverse and surreal film, which garnered much praise during the screenings in Cannes. What is more, the film features an excellent leading role of Jean Dujardin and a great performance of Adèle Haenel, who also starred in Portrait of a Lady on Fire.

Satan’s Tango
Many believe this Béla Tarr’s film to be one of the most outstanding works of contemporary cinema and a mainstay of film history. It is certainly difficult to talk about, but at the same time it is a must-see – everybody should somehow find those 8 hours. That’s is a lot of time, but when you start watching, you can feel as if you were in a state of trance. The screening features two 30-minute intermissions, intended by the director.

Bird Talk
A film by Xawery Żuławski, to be presented for the first time in the world during the New Horizons Festival. The piece was made from a script by Andrzej Żuławski, Xawery’s father, who passed away a couple of years ago and who wrote the script with his son in mind. It is an intimate, yet current film, presenting a vision of contemporary Poland. At the same time, it is a film about Andrzej Żuławski, an uncompromising director and artist, and a father-son, son-father relationship.
