Public toilets in Wroclaw - where to go? [MAP]

Wroclaw runs more than 30 public toilets, and they are taken care of by four institutions. However, most of them, 25 to be exact is the responsibility of the Roads Management and City Maintenance Board.

"Public toilets are not profitable. Only a few people use them daily. The prices haven't changed for years - the charge for using the urinal is 0,5 PLN and 1 PLN for the toilet booth. Low prices fail to attract users, however. Fewer and fewer people use these establishments nowadays, because every café, restaurant or bar provides the toilets. Shopping malls also offer customers free toilets, so the demand for the municipal toilet is much lower than even 10 years ago," says Ewa Mazur, a spokesman for the Roads Management and City Maintenance Board.

Since 1997, the city has built 9 new public toilets, among others, at the terminus in Leśnica and near the Wroclaw Stadium, by the communication hub. During last year's renovation the public toilet at ul. Sklodowskiej-Curie was demolished. The latest data showed that it was used by as few as two people a day.

"The necessary repair and maintenance of toilets costs us approx. 800 000 PLN per year. The equipment quickly deteriorates and needs replacement, so this is where such a high cost comes from" Ewa Mazur adds.

The popularity of public toilets increases during the summer. The most visited facilities are the toilet at pl. Katedralny. It is used by 100 people a day, and to compare, only 17 in the winter. A popular one is also the public toilet at the Wroclaw Stadium communication hub. On a match day, it is used by 30 people on average. Also, often used the toilet at the Island Słodowa that runs from June to October.

Interestingly, two city toilets, even offer additional facilities for both locals and tourists. At ul. Wilanowska in Psie Pole available is a 24/7 shower, and the toilet in Południowy Park offers a changing table for babies.
