  3. Poems by Tadeusz Różewicz on Wroclaw pavements

The poem ‘Kto jest poetą’ [Who Is a Poet] by Tadeusz Różewicz is what we will find beneath our feet; it is imprinted on pavement slabs in the Przejście Garncarskie passage. Until 27th June, we can read Różewicz’s two poems in this way on a few streets in the centre of Wroclaw on the occasion of the 100th anniversary of his birth. This initiative accompanied the Silesius International Poetry Festival and is part of a campaign of introducing poems in non-obvious places.

The poet’s words beneath our feet

‘We realise that not everyone will come to a poetry meeting, but we want people to come across poetry in various places,’ says Katarzyna Janusik from the Wroclaw House of Literature, which (in collaboration with the Garaże Kultury Association) co-ordinates the project of poetry in urban space.

On Plac Solny, one fragment of the poem refers the reader to another.

‘Each fragment has a separate impact, because these are short and strong phrases, and they assume a completely new sense when put together,’ explains Katarzyna Janusik.

The poems ‘Kto jest poetą’ and ‘Oczyszczenie’ [Cleansing] are sprayed down on pavements around the Market Square. Prepared a few days before the Silesius International Poetry Festival held in May, they are a temporary installation and will be visible until the weekend of 25th-27th June, for one month after the end of the festival.
