The origins of the idea
The region's capital is now home to two oncology centres that are subordinate to provincial authorities: Lower Silesia Oncology and Lower Silesia Pulmonology Centres. Given the range of medical services provided, qualified personnel and unique equipment, both hospitals act as regional centres, which means they provide medical services to all the residents of Lower Silesia. Both centres have to constantly expand due to the growing number of patients who require medical care they provide. However, both centres are housed in facilities which are too cramped and with no potential for further extensions. Additionally, some of these facilities date back to the 19th century and are unserviceable.
For this reason, Lower Silesia's authorities have made a decision to build a New Oncology Hospital, which is oncology and pulmonology centres rolled into one. Seven different locations in Wroclaw and its immediate vicinity were considered. One of them was Wroclaw's Zabrodzie, near ul Kwiatkowskiego. In the end, a decision was made to develop the hospital near ul Kosmonautów, just across the street from the New Provincial Hospital. Several major factors played a part in this, including local area development plans, the area's ownership structure and access to public transport.
