"How many tickets would you be able to lay out along the equator? Provide your answer in megabytes." Is this a question for you Maths or Science teacher? You could not be more wrong! The task can be solved already in middle school. You can do this if you join My Future in Technology, a project carried out by seven leading IT companies in collaboration with the Wroclaw Metropolitan Area Development Agency and the City Office of Wroclaw. The programme was launched exactly one month ago.

My Future in Technology is primarily designed for Wroclaw's secondary school students. Its major goal is not only to encourage young people to learn Maths, Science or IT, but also to promote creative thinking to make the most of your knowledge. The students will have think different to solve the riddles. But there is a huge incentive. The winners in the competition will be both enjoying prestige and attractive awards. Young people like to compete, you can see it from the very start.

Four riddles, four challenges

The answers to the first riddle, which was expected to be challenging, were accepted by the end of April. It turned out, however, that young people found it easy to solve the task on digital signal transfer. Fifty-three different teams registered their answers.

"The task has turned out to be easy for the participants," says Agnieszka Augustynow from Gigaset, who also formulated the riddle. "We were surprised by the form of the answers. We received videos that featured some acting, an animated film and even software with original source code. The form is not the only thing that matters. The subject matter was just as important, and everything turned out to be top quality. This shows that schools are doing a good job and that students are really interested in exact sciences," says Monika Cwynar-Kępa from Capgemini, Spokesperson for My Future in Technology.
The winners of the first stages in My Future in Technology was officially announced on 25 April. Five different teams were awarded. As it was difficult to choose the winner, the jury decided to award the runner-up and offer three distinctions.
And the winners are:

Second challenge: a backpack riddle

The second riddle is already available at My Future in Technology website. As previously, the answers will be assessed by the organisers of the project, companies such as Nokia, Capgemini, Gigaset, Espotel, QAD, Objectivity and Techland as well as the Wroclaw Metropolitan Area Development Agency.
"The project's focus is on teamwork. Collaboration fosters creativity and serves as a basis for innovation. The IT industry is a very good example in this respect," says Sebastian Kulej from Nokia.
The organisers are happy with the number of the students who have joined the competition. Their conviction that both girls and boys are interested in developing their knowledge on exact sciences has been confirmed at the very first stages of the project.

Promising results

"We are really surprised by how the project is getting on. We are really happy with the number of the teams and the videos they have submitted. We do hope that the number of the participants will remain the same until the very end of the project. We also look forward to their answers. The programme is developing as expected, the way we wanted it when we first met as a group of seven companies" says Aleksandra Buchla from Espotel.

Next steps

The participants in My Future in Technology are in for a lot of excitement before the competition comes to an end. The second question, the answers to which were accepted by 29th April, will be followed by another two, each of which to be awarded on its own. A separate award will be presented to the school with the largest number of participants. Additionally, Internet users will be voting for the best video in the competition to offer an award of their own. The project comes to an end at the beginning of June.
