Mobile Wrocław after the pandemic – new communication facilities

The city not only continues its current activities, but has also decided to implement new ones with the aim to help residents move around the city on foot, by bicycle or public transport, especially on what concerns the city centre.

For pedestrians and cyclists

One of the most important initiatives will be facilities for pedestrians and cyclists introduced in the centre of Wrocław, where pedestrian and bicycle infrastructure is well developed, but has a few missing elements worth focusing on.

Three zones with speed limit of 30 km/h will be created on Świdnicka, Sądowa and Świętego Mikołaja Streets. These are streets where target solutions friendly for cyclists, pedestrians and passengers are already planned, but have not been implemented yet – says Elwira Nowak, director of the Department of Municipal Engineering.

A fragment of Ruska Street – from the Solny Square to Rzeźnicza Street, where we experience the largest stream of pedestrians, coming from stops located on Kazimierza Wielkiego Street, will be excluded from car traffic. A new pedestrian crossing will also be built there in the coming weeks.

After changes in the organisation of traffic, restaurants and bars located on Ruska Street will be able to use the calmed zone to set up and enlarge their gastronomic gardens.

Another important initiative is crossing at the Legnicka Street next to the tram stop “Młodych Techników”, which can be reached without having to climb the stairs, as well as a new crossing – implemented for the moment as a temporary solution as a result of the underpass being closed – which will be created at the southern entry of the Dominican Square.

„School Street” is an initiative that has worked well in many cities. – It is a proven solution to break the paradox in which parents get their kids to school by cars because they are afraid of their safety due to heavy traffic close to the schools – adds Tomasz Stefanicki, deputy director of the Office of Sustainable Mobility.

Actions are also being carried out to keep the pavements in the centre of Wrocław free of cars parked illegally, which is extremely burdensome for pedestrians and parents with prams, as well as people with reduced mobility.

Wherever it is possible, we will use for that purpose, among others, elements of greenery. And so, the following streets will be freed from illegal parking in the near future: Ofiar Oświęcimskich (60 m), Kuźnicza (40 m), Świętej Marii Magdaleny (25 m), Jodłowa (40 m), Odrzańska (12 m), Szewska (3 m), Więzienna (30 m), Garbary (34 m) and Igielna (80 m).

For drivers – one hour of free parking by the National Forum of Music and additional parking spaces

Drivers who, in connection with their duties, are forced to settle matters in the very centre of the city will not be left without support. The possibility of free parking in the parking lot of the National Forum of Music for the first hour will be introduced especially for them.

Until the end of the year, barriers in the “Park and Ride” car parks will also remain open, in order to encourage drivers, especially commuting from the agglomeration area, to leave the car and travel around Wroclaw by public transport.

For passengers of public transport

Renovation works are also underway on the tracks, in the centre, e.g. at Świdnicka Street or on Kołłątaja Street. The purpose of these renovations is to make the trams as punctual and reliable as possible. For the first time in the city's history, as much as PLN 80 million will be allocated to the renovation and maintenance of tracks.

Work is also underway on an integrated ticket that would allow to travel on different modes of transport, not only within Wrocław, but also the entire agglomeration, as it should be remembered that a large share of car traffic (approx. 250,000 cars a day) is generated by commuters from outside the city.

The city also wants to encourage employees and students to travel by bicycle - including the city bike – which is why another challenge for cyclists is planned for autumn.

Why is that?

The proposed package is adapted to the conditions in Wroclaw and to the actions that are carried out on a regular basis.
