Remember! Blue for paper and cardboard, yellow for plastics and metals and multi-material packaging, green for white and coloured glass and brown for bio-waste. The black colour of the bin is reserved for mixed waste – this is the rubbish remaining after the segregation that cannot be placed in any of the other fractions. Nor can it be the problem waste that we have to manage in a special way, such as batteries, light bulbs or electro-waste. And, best of all, keep our crib sheet.
When disposing of waste, remember a few simple rules:
Always place rubbish in the container, never outside or next to it. In such a situation, it will not be collected by a waste removal company and the cost of its removal will have to be borne by the property administrator and, consequently, by us. Remember that the administrator is obliged to clean up untidiness around a bin shed or rubbish bin (up to a distance of 1.5 m). This is stipulated in the rules of maintenance of cleanliness and order in Wroclaw.
Dispose of rubbish economically. Paper waste: crush large boxes and cardboard before placing them in the container, and the same goes for plastic bottles and beverage cartons. When disposing of bio-waste, especially kitchen scraps, place it in the container in bulk, without plastic bags. This does not apply to biocompostable bags. Do not forget to empty the packaging you plan to throw away: jars, bottles, cans, cartons.
PSZOK is OK!
Wroclaw's Selective Waste Collection Points, shortly called PSZOKs, have already collected more than 5,600 tonnes of waste this year. It's a free and easy way to get rid of troublesome rubbish. Not only when you do a renovation or a major clean-up.
There are two eco-points in Wroclaw where people can submit problem waste free of charge – all waste that should not be thrown into household waste containers or collected outside designated containers. At 9 Michalczyka and 51 Janowska streets, you can leave bulky waste, electro-waste, expired medicines, batteries, paint, rubble, tyres, but also demolition felt, pesticides or fire extinguishers. Work is underway to open a third PSZOK. The new eco-point will be located at Szwajcarska Street and made available to residents later this year. At what times do they operate?
PSZOK, 9 Kazimierza Michalczyka Street, 8 a.m. – 5 p.m. from Monday to Friday and 8 a.m. – 4 p.m. on Saturdays
PSZOK, 51 Janowska Street, Monday – Saturday, 7 a.m. – 3 p.m.
Holiday renovation
Holidays are the time for renovations – you can bring a small amount of post-renovation waste, rubble or bathroom ceramics to the PSZOK. When doing so, remember that this type of waste should be removed from the bag and the latter should be placed in the right container. The same goes for audio-video and household equipment and other electro-waste that we can leave at a PSZOK. Remember that electro-waste also includes cables, chargers and even toys with electronics.
You can also bring bulky waste to the eco-point – old furniture, including garden furniture, MDF boards, mattresses, carpets, doors, ironing boards or laundry dryers. Old paints, adhesives and resins – this is another group of waste accepted at the PSZOK. It is best to bring this type of waste in its original packaging with labels indicating the contents of the containers. Among the problem waste that can be left at Michalczyka and Janowska streets are building paper, expired and unwanted medicines, light bulbs and fluorescent tubes, batteries, accumulators and tyres.
What about the size?
Bulky waste can also be disposed of free of charge into municipal containers – the map and times of their placements can be found at ecosystem.wroc.pl. Containers are provided at the request of property administrators, housing estate councils or co-operatives – such demand should be reported to them if no placements are planned for our area in the near future. We are not allowed to deposit them near rubbish sheds, with the exception of a waste collection tour covering a certain group of districts in the centre of Wroclaw.
SZOP will collect, too
The Problem Waste Collection Vehicles, shortly called SZOPs, have become a permanent feature of the Wroclaw landscape. Find out where and when you can come across them.
We can bring there all sorts of problematic waste, leftover paint, paint packaging, used light bulbs, fluorescent tubes, batteries, rechargeable batteries and even expired medicines. SZOPs accept chemicals: solvents, expired oils from car engines, detergents, adhesives and adhesive packaging, binders and resins, plant protection products, but also edible oils and fats, inks, printer toners and mercury thermometers.
It is worth recalling that liquids (oils, pesticides or paints) and medicines are only accepted in leak-proof packages. They must have original labels for the ease of their identification. The SZOP personnel may refuse to accept our waste when there is a likelihood that it is not from a household.
SZOPs appear on each of Wroclaw's housing estates twice a month. The collection tour takes place from Monday to Saturday between 4 p.m. and 8 p.m. At each location, the stopover lasts one hour. On the website of Ekosystem, you can find a work schedule of SZOPs with locations and stop dates until the end of this year.
Waste – who is responsible for what?
