The Getty Foundation has announced the list of the first ten grants to be received by modern buildings. The grants were awarded as part of the Foundation's new initiative to protect 20th-century architecture throughout the world called Keeping It Modern. The grant will help to identify future conservation issues at the building.
We are extremely happy that the Centenary Hall has been recognised by one of the most prestigious organisations that support arts and architecture research and historic sites conservation. The fact that our building is on the same list with the Sydney Opera House, Le Corbusier's study and apartment in Paris or Frank Lloyd Wright Robie House speaks for itself," says Andrzej Baworowski, the Centenary Hall's President.
Each design awarded with a grant was selected due to its importance for architecture and the potential for developing conservation practices to protect modern architecture. Grants may be used to develop conservation management plans as well as for maintenance and conservation purposes.
The Centenary Hall is certainly a unique piece of architecture. The building was designed by the eminent architect Max Berg, and it is now recognised as one of the best pieces of 20th-century architecture. The Hall was designed to serve the residents of the city as well as visitors, and it performs similar functions nowadays. In 2006, the building, which is considered one of the most important landmarks in Wroclaw, was included on the list of UNESCO Heritage Sites.
