Wroclaw streets will be washed and swept more frequently

Mechanical washing and sweeping works will cover twice as many roads and will be performed four times more frequently than until now. Under the decision of Mayor of Wroclaw Jacek Sutryk, the rules of summer cleaning of the city have changed. Moreover, a fully electric sweeper will ride out to the streets of Wroclaw for the first time this year.

The change of the summer city cleaning schedule is caused mainly by concern about the better air quality. The dust on the streets that is brought on by passing cars or simply by the wind affects the comfort of breathing.

‘Last season we swept and washed around 180 km of roads. From today, vehicles like the one in which we are riding now will keep nearly 360 km of Wroclaw roads clean. But this is not all: we have also increased the frequency of road sweeping and washing works. To sum up: until now the streets have been washed only once a month – now the roads will be cleaned every week in the summer season, which means four times more frequently,’ reported Mayor Jacek Sutryk from the floor of the sprinkler.

Spring cleaning works have begun

Regular cleaning works in Wroclaw cover also bus and tram stops, pavements, routes for pedestrians and cyclists, cycle lanes, car parks, underground passages, greenstones, trackways and balloon loops.

‘In the first half of April, we will also wash dustbins in roadway areas. Today there are nearly 6,500 of them in the city,’ enumerates Bartosz Małysa, President of Ekosystem – a company responsible for keeping the city clean.

In addition, Wroclaw takes care of flood embankments, even though they belong to the state-owned company Wody Polskie. More than 100 dustbins have been placed there – near the zoo, at Kozanów, in the area of Bujwida and Kasprowicza streets, at Osobowice, etc. The dustbins are kept clean on a running basis.

The Wyspa Słodowa island has also been covered by the regular duty of sanitation services since last autumn. More than 60 dustbins have been placed in that area.

Equipment ready for use

The equipment used for the summer cleaning of Wroclaw has already been overhauled and is ready to operate. The following devices will be used this year:

  • 13 pcs – roadway sweepers
  • 5 pcs – small-size roadway sweepers
  • 5 pcs – roadway sprinklers
  • 14 pcs – pavement sweepers

For environmental purposes, a fully electric sweeper will be used for the first time for cleaning pavements, cycle lanes and car parks in Wroclaw this year.
