Wroclaw lynx pull it off

Data publikacji: Autor:

A year ago it was Orpan, this year it's Biała. Lynx from Wroclaw take Poland by storm. The young from the Wroclaw Zoo start to populate other Polish zoos or environmental centres that strive to return this beautiful species to the wild.

Lynx from Wroclaw pull it off both in Poland and elsewhere in Europe. They also help their species in its fight against extinction. Their offspring have a chance of return to wildlife.

Biała from Białystok

This two-year-old female from the Wroclaw Zoo has just relocated to the Akcent Zoo in Białystok. This small zoo showcase Poland's major animal species. Our feline lady has immediately won the hearts of both the zoo keepers and the visitors. A competition for her name has just come to a close. There were three candidates: Marysia, Kitka and Biała. The third name pulled it off. There is much likelihood she will find a mate and a few cubs as a result.

Orpan on a mission

Biała is not the only lynx that left Wroclaw on a mission to save the species in other locations throughout Poland. The Wroclaw lynx offspring also made their way to many zoo, both in Poland and elsewhere in Europe. Last year, a now four-year-old lynx called Orpan settled in Dzika Zagroda in Jabłonowa near Mirosławiec in the region of Pomorze. His keepers soon renamed the cat to Urban. He joined a female called Rózia. Their offspring have a fair chance of return to the wild. From the day of his birth, Orpan was selected to leave the Wroclaw Zoo. He would soon fall out with his father. The cat was relocated to a place that specialises in returning the lynx to the wild. Orpan and Rózia's offspring have a fair chance to successfully leave the captivity.

The lynx can be found in Europe and Asia. Prior to the domesticated cat, the lynx and wild cat were the only members of the feline family to live in Poland. The lynx is one of the largest predator species in the whole of Europe. 285 lynx were reported to live in Poland in 2010. They create two populations: lowland (to be found in north-western Poland, including the Biebrza River Basin and Białowieska, Augustowska, Knyszyńska and Borecka Forests) and Carpathian (to be found in the eastern and western Carpathians and Carpathian Foothills). Since the 1980s, rare sightings have been reported in Roztocze, the Solska Forest and Polesie Lubelskie.

Returned to the wild in the early 1990s, a population of the lowland lynx can also be found in the Kampinoska Forest. Additionally, since 2007, several attempts have been made to relocate the Estonian lynx to the Piska Forest. Since the turn of 2009 and 2010, sightings have been reported at the Polish and Czech border in the Karkonosze National Park. The lynx probably came from the Szumawa area, where they were successfully reintroduced. Sightings have also been reported in other parts of the Sudeten (especially in the Karkonosze and Izera Mountains). Individuals sightings have been made in the Bory Tucholskie Forest, Słowiński National Park and the Notecka Forest.
