University Paediatrics Centre kicks off in Wroclaw

Data publikacji: Autor:

Three buildings next door to each other, instead of seven on different streets. Two admission rooms, and a refurbished interior with a total of 120 beds. The teaching hospital SPSK 1 at ul. Chałubińskiego solemnly and officially inaugurated the University Centre for Paediatrics. Thus, the process of moving the clinics, which lasted for three years, has finally been finished.

The centre brings together all children's clinics operating in the hospital. So far, they were scattered in seven different places - some children's clinics were many streets away from the others and outside the hospital campus, e.g. the Paediatric, Cardiology and Allergy Clinic, or the Endocrinology and Diabetology Clinic, for many years occupying the building at ul. Hoene-Wrońskiego. In January, the Pediatrics and Infectious Diseases Clinic was the last one to move from ul. Bujwida to the building at ul. Chałubińskiego 2-2a. With the support of several foundations (including Polsat Foundation, which bought beds), the process of equipping it ended recently. And though it moved to the old building, it looks modern inside, because the interior has undergone renovation: the windows were replaced, and rooms painted in pastel, serene colours. Adapting the historic buildings abandoned by the clinics moved to the hospital in ul. Borowska cost 3.5 million złoty. And the building housing the children's surgery and urology at ul. Skłodowskiej-Curie is still waiting for a major overhaul.

Clinics at ul. Chałubińskiego and ul. Skłodowskiej

"Today, we draw a certain stage to a close - the consolidation of all the clinics in one place. It's not about opening a new building, but about opening to a new thought. Three years ago, when I was director of the hospital, the idea was to focus the medical services in one place for the convenience of patients and improved operation of the hospital,"said Piotr Nowicki, director of the SPSK1 Hospital. The director mentioned several bizarre situations resulting from the dispersion of the clinics in different places. The worst was the night.

"It came to the point where to transport an infant from the Surgery Clinic to the Anaesthesiology and Intensive Care Clinic, 30 meters away, we had to call a special ambulance for transporting infants. This took the precious time and was to the patient's disadvantage" said the director. Now, the ICU is in the same building as the paediatric surgery at ul. Skłodowskiej-Curie, and we don't have to trouble our heads with the transport of the little patients. "We went back to the old solutions, i.e. putting two clinics in one building, though some were very opposed to it," says Piotr Nowicki.

By consolidating clinics included in the University Centre for Paediatrics, the specialist clinics are also located in one place.

Apart from the complexity of services and the facilitations for patients who no longer need to be transported for tests and to different clinics with ambulances, the relocation of the clinics will have facilitated the collaboration between various specialists and will have represented a considerable cost saving for the indebted hospital.

Connectors between the buildings and the airstrip

Still, there is a lot to be done. Installation needs to be installed in the hospital units, create fire zones and additional passageways.

The plan for the near future is to create a single central admission room (instead of the present two), and to construct connectors between the buildings of the children's clinics to facilitate the passage. The management's idea for the future is to create an emergency helipad. It could be located on the roof of the new building, which could be built on the campus.

Remaining at the old location at ul. Bujwida is only the Clinic of Haematology and children's oncology, which is due to moving to Przylądek Nadziei (the Cape of Hope) - the new headquarters in the vicinity of the USK Hospital at ul. Borowska, the part of which it will then become.
