The investment on Wolności Square and Zamkowa Street includes, in particular:
- replacement of the pavement,
- drainage in the square,
- as well as new plantings and more greenery on Zamkowa Street.
Revitalised Wolności Square and green Zamkowa Street
Piotr Paś, President of the Management Board of Wrocławskie Inwestycje sp. z o.o.: ‘We plan to replace the damaged slabs on Wolności Square and modernise the drainage system on the surface in the square.
Zamkowa Street will also be rebuilt as part of the same task. This one will become much greener. The planned plantings include imposing small-leaved lime trees, which will be up to 36 cm tall, and saplings that can reach up to 6–7 metres in height.
This is quite a change, because the field maples growing on Zamkowa Street until now were much lower. These will be replanted in a different location - in Pracze Odrzańskie. There will also be new flowerbeds, shrubs and bulbous plants, 100 intermediate yews, box-leaved hollies, flat-leaved myrtles, as well as decorative garlics, blue sages, catnips and lady’s-mantles.’
How long will it take to complete work on Wolności Square and Zamkowa Street?
The work is expected to take up to five months; during that time, Wolności Square will be largely closed off.
However, it will still be possible to use the underground car park and, of course, the adjacent National Forum of Music.
There are already dance parties in the Market Square
However, no events will take place in the square during this time. For example, the famous Wroclaw Dance has already been moved from Wolności Square to the Market Square in recent weeks. And this will remain so at least until the end of 2025.
The cost of the entire task is just under PLN 8 million. The contractor is Zakład Sieci i Zasilania Sp. z o.o. from Wroclaw.
Why will Wolności Square in Wroclaw not be greened?
The city has recently probed the possibility of greening not only Zamkowa Square but also Wolności Square. This, however, proved impossible due to the representative functions of the square.
‘Because of its representative functions, Wolności Square cannot accept trees embedded permanently in the ground. This is the parade ground that Wroclaw needs. The market does not meet such requirements due to limited space, and two years ago we greened the Nowy Targ Square, which is also in the centre. That is why we need to leave a large open space on Wolności Square,’ emphasises Piotr Paś, President of WI.
