Wroclaw will be enriched with a private cultural institution. It will be located in the renovated Baroque house at Pl. Solny 4. Building works should start in the autumn and last until the end of 2016.

The house at Pl. Solny 4 is owned by Violetta Wojanowski, who comes from Lower Silesia and currently lives in Berlin. The owner’s representatives inform that the investor of repair works will be Op Enheim – a European public utility organisation (its name refers to the Oppenheim family – the former owners of the building).

‘The aim of Op Enheim will be to support and take care of the development of culture between Wroclaw and Berlin and make it accessible to the audience by holding international exhibitions in the exhibition hall as well as other events,’ says Katarzyna Tabiszewska, the project manager.

On the ground floor, there will be eating establishments, and the premises on higher floors will include an art gallery, apartments and a room adapted for small lectures, banquets and concerts. The house reconstruction concept was designed by Major Architekci – a Wroclaw-based studio.

‘The project assumes a thorough reconstruction of the back premises, a full renovation of historic facades and an enhancement of the most valuable interior elements. Much attention is paid to the artistic renovation of the existing historic elements of the building,’ says Marcin Major, the owner of Major Architekci, adding that the building was divided functionally in accordance with the conception of a facility comprising culture, art and high-quality rental space in one place.

The investor did not specify the cost of the planned renovation; we only know that it will be a seven-digit amount. The commencement of renovation works is scheduled for this year’s autumn. All works should be finished by the end of 2016.

The house at Pl. Solny 4 is unique. On old photographs taken 100 years ago, the Baroque building looks the same as today.

The house survived the siege of Festung Breslau without damage. The wooden back premises and the 18th-century interior layout have survived.

The Baroque house was built at the end of the 17th century. In the 19th century, it belonged to the Oppenheim family, which ran a foundation giving aid to the poor there. After 1945, the house contained apartments.

The city sold the house

In April 2013, the city sold the house in a tender at the price of 7,920,000 PLN (the asking price was 7,800,000 PLN). According to the bid, the price was reduced by 30%. The specification states, among others, that the real property is built up with a seven-floor residential building with commercial spaces (including the attic and cellars) and with four-floor back premises with the total usable area of around 758 sq. m. The building was entered into the register of historic monuments under no. A/3139/123 on the 15th of February 1962.
