Drivers travelling ul. Kazimierza Wielkiego in the Przejście Świdnickie area (section fifteen metres in length) have been using only two lanes instead of the existing three since the weekend of 16. and 17. January. The change has been put in place due to the Przejście Świdnickie regeneration process. The first stage in the process, which includes the alteration of the pavement in front of the former Bar Barbara, is now coming to an end. The workers will now proceed to revamp the underpass and mark new lanes for the drivers in the street.
Wroclaw's City Office makes it clear that tram service in ul. Kazimierza Wielkiego will be maintained throughout the entire period of the investment. Similarly, car traffic will be maintained on two lanes instead of three. The second stage of the investment will also bring restrictions to pedestrians. They will be able to access tram stops via pedestrian crossings in ul. Szewska and ul. Widok. Pedestrian traffic in ul. Świdnicka will be carried out via a temporary fly-over above ul. Kazimierza Wielkiego. The facility will remain in place until the completion of the investment. The work to insulate the underpass underneath the road and the pavement and the work to reinstall the storm water drainage system are currently under way. The second stage in the Przejście Świdnickie regeneration process starts in late February this year.
The important news is that pedestrians will still be able to use the underpass once the investment has been completed.
One of the main ideas for the underpass's regeneration is that it will be partially converted into an art gallery. The initial design stipulated that the gallery would take the majority of the space in the underpass, which would be whittled down from the original eight metres in width to a mere three. However, Mayor Rafał Dutkiewicz has personally intervened to broaden the underpass by one metre at the expense of the gallery. The revamped underpass will be four metres wide as a result.
