Visitors can choose to follow the main route that starts at the Oder springs in the Oder Mountains in the Czech Republic and lead through tanks that imitate the middle reaches of the river, oxbow lakes and the Oder estuary as it feeds into the Bay of Szczecin. Visitors can watch a variety of species of fish that can be found, or used to be found, in different reaches of the river. First guests at the Odrarium could see the following species of fish: zander, silver bream, rudd, bleak, roach, chub, vimba bream, sturgeon, trout, ide, grayling, barbel, asp, dace, wels catfish, perch, blue bream, crucian carp, carp and tench. Some of these are almost impossible to spot in the wild.
"We haven't completed everything yet, but we have noentheless decided to open the Odrarium to visitors," says Monika Kownacka from the Marketing Department at Wroclaw Zoo.
The process of planting greenery characteristics of the Oder river valley is well under way, and additional species of fish are being introduced to the tanks as well. European pond turtle will also be on display at the Odrarium.
There are also plans to provide various educational installations in the area. Visitors will also be offered to have a peek into the basement, where a variety of machinery such as pumps and filters are keeping the Oder alive.
