Opening weekend of the European Capital of Culture is primarily the ceremony 'Awakening,' directed by Chris Baldwin. It will begin on Sunday, January 17 in four districts of Wroclaw. Parades of Wroclawians and artists will start off from the bus depot Dąbie in ul. Grabiszyńska, depot "Popowice" and form the Higher Military School of Land Forces in ul. Czajkowskiego. They will be lead by the four spirits of Wroclaw: the Spirit of Many Denominations, the Spirit of Innovation, the Spirit of Reconstruction and the Spirit of Flood. They will tell the story of the city.
An extremely important role in this 'performance' will include cyclists. Four hundred people are needed, who, by riding their bikes, will make the eyes of the entire Europe turn to them. 'Four hundred cyclists will create a mobile, luminous ribbon, which can't be cut. Thus the 'cycling polar bears' will become a part of the spectacular musical and visual performance, inaugurating the European Culture Capital Wrocław 2016. For a few minutes, the eyes of entire Europe will be turned to the Opening Ceremony of the ECC, and the part Wroclaw cyclists will play in it,' reads the invitation to this event.
In addition to an extraordinary opportunity to become part of a unique project, anyone who declares their participation in the January 17 event and will open the European Culture Capital on a bike, will receive a gift set prepared especially for a limited group of cyclists.
