What do people in Wroclaw like reading? When can we meet them with a book? Do they have their favourite writers, or do they use reviews as guidelines? Do they borrow books from libraries, or do they prefer owning them? On 8th September, which is the National Literacy Day, we invite all Wroclaw inhabitants to share their passion for reading and join the #czytamwroclaw campaign.

On 8th September, the International Literacy Day is celebrated worldwide. It was established by UNESCO in 1965 in order to remind the international community of one of fundamental human rights – the right to education, which is still a luxury good for many people in many countries. On that day, events promoting the skill of writing and reading are organised around the world.

A book instead of a ticket in means of public transport

Wroclaw also joined the celebration of this day by inaugurating the #czytamwroclaw campaign last year. On that day, every Wroclaw inhabitant reading a paper book in means of public transport was allowed to travel without a ticket and, in the event of a ticket check, received a bookmark instead of a fine. The same thing will happen this year, with the only difference that both traditional books and e-books on e-readers (this means dedicated devices, not tablets or smartphones!) will be taken into account. However, this is not the only attraction planned for that day in Wroclaw.

A parachute jump for book lovers

This year, as a part of the #czytamwroclaw campaign and the celebration of the International Literacy Day, we invited Wroclaw inhabitants to take part in a reading competition where six parachute jumps can be won. Each participant was only required to send us a photo with a book selected by him/her and write what, where and when he/she likes reading. Then the “soaring” award will go to six persons selected in an online voting.

#czytamwroclaw in City Public Libraries

One of the main partners of this year’s campaign is the City Public Library in Wroclaw. On that day, it will be possible to get a campaign bookmark or pose with a book for a photo in selected branches of the CPL in Wroclaw.

Another partner of this year’s campaign is the Księgarnia Autorska bookshop in the Pasaż Grunwaldzki shopping centre. It will offer not only campaign bookmarks, but also a free cup of coffee to book lovers. Everyone who will visit Księgarnia Autorska on 8th September, take a photo of himself/herself with a book and upload it to his/her Instagram or Facebook page (as a public photo) with a #czytamwroclaw hashtag will be served a cup of coffee for free.
