Klingert’s Diving Suit: the short film about the Wroclaw inventor will soon have its premiere

The main character of the film is Karl Klingert – an inventor living at the turn of the 19th century who designed, among others, a diving suit. The premiere of the animated short story is planned in a few months.

Klingert's Diving Suit is the story of an unusual invention made by the Wroclaw designer, told from the perspective of his 6-year-old daughter Bi.

Klingert lived in Wroclaw in 1760–1828, working as a maths and physics teacher. He designed experimental models, experimented with electricity and took interest in thermodynamics and fluid mechanics. He invented, among others, a compressed air lighter, a lamp for underground works, a fire escape ladder and basket, a thermometer and compass for the blind, a hand prosthesis, a rehabilitation exercise chair and a wheelchair.

His greatest work is the first atmospheric diving suit, designed in 1797. A few years ago, diving attempts in a replica of this suit were carried out on Wyspa Słodowa. On the Oder boulevard, there is a plaque commemorating Klingert’s achievements.

The inventor with Marcin Dorociński's face

The production of the film about the Wroclaw designer was initiated by Karina Kowalska and Justyna Wasiak from the Warsaw Diving Museum, who are also co-producers of the animation.

The film is being prepared in the classic 2D animation technology, with Marcin Dorociński playing the role of Klinger.

‘The faithful portrait of Wroclaw in the late 18th century is a great benefit of the film,’ stresses Artur Wyrzykowski, the director and producer of the film. ‘I hope that the inhabitants of Lower Silesia will find Klingert’s Diving Suit interesting and will be eager to see the film at special shows in the Lower Silesian Film Centre and the New Horizons Cinema combined with lectures on the history of the city and its great inventor.

The producers are gathering funds for the completion of the production process. A finished fragment of the animation can be seen in the video promoting fundraising for Klingert’s Diving Suit.

The partners of the film are, among others, the Polish Film Institute, the Lower Silesian Film Centre, the Wroclaw Audiovisual Technology Centre (CeTA) and the Estonian studio Eesti Joonisfilm.
