The Olga Tokarczuk Foundation in the Karpowicz Villa

The Nobel Prize winner has established a foundation supporting the work of writers and translators, as well as literary research, translation studies, and reflections on the role of literature in the history of social change.

The newly established foundation will be based in the villa of Maria and Tymoteusz Karpowicz (at Krzycka 29), which was designated for this purpose by the city, but before the Foundation moves in, the building will be renovated first.

The symbolic beginning of the Foundation was marked by Mayor of Wrocław Jacek Sutryk presenting Olga Tokarczuk the commemorative key to the villa during the October meeting with the writer at the National Forum of Music.

The official announcement of the Wrocław Literature House, which will act as a strategic partner for the Olga Tokarczuk Foundation, states that the Nobelist’s dream is to create an intellectual and artistic centre which in the future will be equal to the best institutions of this kind in Europe and in the world.

“The author intends the Foundation to become a space for international debate about the capabilities of literature in the field of diagnosing the visible and invisible world, describing the reality in which xenophobic and nationalist moods are growing dangerously fast, and a space dedicated to the debate about art and human beings as part of nature. It is supposed to be a meeting place for authors and translators from all over the world, as well as deal with educational, scholarship and residency programmes.”

In future, the Foundation will be headquartered at Krzycka 29, in a villa where Tymoteusz Karpowicz, a poet, prose writer and playwright, once lived with his wife Maria. According to the wishes of the late writer, his home was to become a place where writers would work and meet with readers. The villa will be renovated to make it available to the Foundation as soon as possible. The Mayor of Wrocław also wants to support the functioning of the new organisation.
