‘For years, Wroclaw has attracted major sporting events and proved that it knows how to host them. We have hosted EURO 2012, The World Games, numerous national team matches and last year’s UEFA Conference League final. Two of world football’s big names – Manchester United and AC Milan – are set to face each other at Tarczyński Arena. This is yet another excellent opportunity to present Wroclaw to fans from around Poland and abroad, but, above all, to enjoy this great football festival together. Come along to the stadium or, if you do not have tickets, to the fan zone at Wolności Street,’ says Jakub Mazur, Deputy Mayor of Wroclaw.
The Super Match will take place on Saturday 15 August. The first whistle is scheduled for 4:45 p.m. The gates of Tarczyński Arena will open at 3 p.m., and the stadium should be ready for use half an hour earlier. It is expected that 43,302 people will attend the match.
‘The scale of interest extends far beyond Wroclaw and Poland. An analysis of sales figures shows that, as at 3 August, 41,030 tickets have been sold. They were bought by fans from 53 countries. Fans from Poland are definitely the largest group – 37,951 tickets sold, which accounts for 92.5 per cent of the total. The next places are taken by the United Kingdom, Czech Republic, Slovakia and Germany. However, tickets were also sold to fans from the United States, Australia, Japan, Singapore, Hong Kong, etc. ‘The Super Match will be an event with an international reach,’ says Tomasz Rachwał, President of Feelmotion, the organiser of the event.
Special transport service to Tarczyński Arena
Due to the expected attendance, a special bus and tram service will be provided. The organisers and the city encourage supporters to travel to the stadium primarily by public transport.
‘Around 2 hours before the kick-off, special tram lines T1 and T2 will run to and around Tarczyński Arena more or less every 10 minutes. In addition, a special bus service will be launched between the Stadium and the Fan Zone – S2 buses will run every 20 minutes from 10 a.m. and every 10 minutes shortly before the kick-off,’ explains Dawid Barabasz, Director of the Transport Department of the Wroclaw City Office.
Enhanced transport service will also be available to fans after the final whistle. From around 7 p.m., special trams and buses will run from both sides of the stadium towards the city centre more or less every 3 minutes. There are also plans to launch a special bus line S6 providing direct access to the airport every 20 minutes from 6:40 p.m. till 8:20 p.m.
‘During an event of this scale, it is crucial to ensure that tens of thousands of people are smoothly transported to the stadium and then taken home. Therefore, we are launching special routes and increasing the frequency of services in the Tarczyński Arena area. We encourage fans to leave their cars at home on that day and take a tram or bus instead. We will monitor the situation closely and respond to the number of passengers so that we could ease the congestion around the stadium as quickly as possible once the match has finished,’ says Przemysław Nowicki, Deputy President of MPK Wroclaw.
Football excitement not just at the stadium
The Super Match is to be more than just a clash between two European giants. The organiser is preparing a Fan Festival – Fan Zone and will also sell the official merchandise of Manchester United and AC Milan.
The setting of the event will also be expanded. A special pre-match scenario has been planned, including the team entrance ceremony, half-time entertainment and the post-match ceremony. The programme includes musical entertainment provided by a DJ, artistic performances, special effects, the presentation of the teams and the trophy, and the trophy-giving ceremony.
Fan zone and match viewing also available at Wolności Square
The football excitement on 15 August will not be limited solely to Tarczyński Arena. In the centre of Wroclaw, a special fan zone will be set up at Wolności Square, where people can watch the match between Manchester United and AC Milan together. The area will be open to residents of Wroclaw on 14 August from 2 p.m. till 8 p.m. and on 15 August from 10 a.m. to 10 p.m..
‘The centrepiece of the area will be a large screen showing the match. This offer is addressed mainly to those who will not watch the match from the stands of Tarczyński Arena. We are also organising a wide range of activities for children and adults, a food court, performances by artists, music played by a DJ, and a programme run by hosts. ‘We want to create a place full of sporting excitement, entertainment and all the best this special football festival has to offer,’ says Łukasz Wójcik, Director of the Wroclaw Youth Sports Centre, which is responsible for organising the fan zone.
Over 43,000 spectators expected
‘The preparations cover all key areas of operation of the stadium – from the pitch, changing rooms and technical infrastructure, to security, crowd management, medical support, media services, VIP areas and emergency procedures. ‘Although this is not the first major event of its kind at Tarczyński Arena (it is worth mentioning, for example, the UEFA Conference League final, matches of the Polish national team, and boxing galas), every event is slightly different and we have to prepare for it a little differently each time,’ says Marcin Przychodny, President of Tarczyński Arena.
Detailed plans for evacuation and emergency access routes, entry checks, the deployment of emergency services, car parks and spectator access routes and a plan for managing the flow of traffic after the event are under preparation.
On the day before the event, on 14 August at 3 p.m., an inspection of the pitch and an organisational visit are scheduled.
