Botanical Garden:

Ornamental Plants

This section, arranged at the foot of the Holy Cross church, attracts visitors with its diversity of hues and shapes from early spring until late autumn. Here grow decorative trees of colourful leaves - red beeches, golden maples, and varied habit - slender chamaecyparises, weeping larches, circular thujas. Bushes of the Spindle Tree, hibiscus and firethorn are conspicuous by a rich variety of the colours of leaves, flowers and fruits. The collections of perennial plants, like peonies, lilies, daylilies, dahlias, chrysanthemums and irises (the largest one - 250 varieties), look at their best during florescence. Tulips, narcissi and hyacinths produce flowers early in the spring. Each year the permanent collections are enriched with variegated patches of annual plants, such as bright-coloured salvias and lobelias or less common heliotropes and pentstemons. Perennial giant-leaved Gunnera manicata, indigenous to Brazil, can be admired near the pond. A small area has been intended for a summer exhibition of plants that in wintertime are cultivated in glasshouses, i.e. palms, oleanders, orange trees.
